The best comic book inspired movie performances

wolverine

Over the past years weve witnessed an incredible array of comic book heroes and villains make their way onto the big screen, and some for the very first time. This has meant that casting the roles has been quite challenging for producers and matching the ideal performer to each of the characters has often been an exciting if somewhat controversial process. Sometimes an actor or actress could find themselves completely miscast whilst others can be absolutely perfect for the part. Here we cast our eye on the

WOLVERINE – Played by Hugh Jackman

When a particular character has appeared in enough comic books for readers to learn intricate detail about his or her abilities, origins and even personality the character has already quite literally jumped from the pages in the consciousness of the fans. So a well- received casting for a movie adaptation is crucial. And it has to be said that when Aussie star Hugh Jackman donned the claws and sideburns as the iconic Wolverine back in 2000 for Bryan Singers X-Men he embraced the role and has since gone on to play on screen no less than 7 times.

J. JONAH JAMESON – Played by J.K. Simmons

Its by no means a big character in the context of any of the Spider-Man movies however actor J.K. Simmons stood out in the Sam Raimi directed trilogy as the Daily Bugles editor-in-chief. Simmons quite literally bought the two-dimensional comic character to life exactly how he was portrayed right there on the pages and it was how we expected him to act and sound. And the fans, they absolutely loved it.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK – Played by Edward Norton

One of the most iconic and recognisable characters in the entire Marvel universe has to be The Incredible Hulk. Whilst wed rather forget about director Ang Lees CGI-heavy Hulk it was actor Ed Norton who in 2008 managed to breath some life back into Bruce Banner and his mean green alter ego. It was a solidly respectable performance from Norton who managed to inject a healthy dose of humanity into the Banner role. Sadly Norton got passed over when the Hulk was back in action for The Avengers ensemble piece but it has helped sustain the popular character and the franchise has grown from strength to strength since even helping spawn a number of mobile and PC based video games as well as the Incredible Hulk slot game.

THE JOKER – Played by Heath Ledger

Whilst the legendary Jack Nicholson was comically sinister in Tim Burtons Batman it was the unexpected casting of teen heartthrob Heath Ledger in Chris Nolans The Dark Knight that raised the most eyebrows. But who could have ever expected such a career defining performance in the role as the psychotic villain. A performance that is even rumoured to had been partially responsible for the actors sad and untimely death.
