Christmas Day for the US. This started here in Australia a week or two ago and debuted at #1, it's also been nominated for 7 AFI awards (Australia's Oscar). It's the first Aussie film to go number #1 here since Heath Ledger's 'Ned Kelly'.
Highly recommended. An excellent movie I thought. Very realistic, and with excellent acting (finally for a horror!), especially by John Jarratt. Quentin Tarantino told Jarratt that Wolf Creek is the scariest movie he's seen, and Jarratt will now be starring in Tarantino's 'Grind House' and possibly even his 'Inglorious Bastards' too.
The director of Wolf Creek has also started filming another horror here in Australia called 'Rogue' which Bob and Harvey Weinstein's company are financing for 25 million. The Weinstein's bought Wolf Creek for US distibution for 7 million before the movie even opened anywhere (the budget for Wolf Creek was only 1 million). It stars Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell, Sam Worthington, John Jarratt and Stephen Curry.
Just a bit of a warning, some people are finding Wolf Creek very disturbing, and it's infact getting a quite a few walk-outs. But don't expect a gorefest. It's more along the lines of Haneke's 'Funny Games', or the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre', and also 'High Tension'. The director says he was partly inspired by Dogma 95, and also the classic 70's slasher films, so I think the mixture of both works well in it being both very realistic, and suspenseful. Plus with it getting critical acclaim, I think non-horror fans are seeing it too, which may explain so many people being disturbed by it.
This is how a horror should be made - finally!!!
The horror I've been waiting for.
There's more trailers at the US website http://www.wolfcreekthemovie.com/, sorry i don't have links.
