#1. Find a ultimate fan of "LOTR".
#2. Get the 2 disk set now.
#3. Wait till the fall and let your friend buy it.
#4. Then ither Burn the 4 disk set &/or Barrow it.

:big grin: Got it? :big grin:

If you have to choose and buy only one version, I would definetelly go with the 4 disc set (If you can wait till november :D )

It is the same movie + 30 mins. of new scenes. I don't exactly now what the extras are in each set, but the movie is what's most important.

Although an extended cut is due on 12th of November 2002 which will be presented in a 4 disc set. Disc 1 & 2 will be hold the film (30 minutes longer) and discs 3 & 4 will contain six hours of original supplementary material, full details to follow.

The six hours of extras will not be present on the 6th of August release, likewise the extras on the 6th of August release will not be present on this extended cut, both hold exclusive material.

btw the 2 disc version is cheap here... only 14.99 euros, around $15 US..... and I heard its priced in the same range around the world

yep.. its the same price all. Infact... its selling for AUD$29.95 here so its ONLY JUST cheaper than the U.S. price. Baah... who cares. Glad its not like a AUD$40+ DVD.

Rent the 2-disc version. Wait for the 4-disc version. Get the limited gift set if you can.

Then after "Return of the King" comes out, wait for the box set, which may or may not include the 2-disc versions.
(I bet some sort of a box set/box sets is bound to come out eventually! That's how the DVD business is today!)

Don't get the 2-disc seperately just yet unless it is going out of print and the re-release version doesn't have the extra it has now.

This is what I'm gonna do. That doesn't mean you have to do the same. :)

Then again, if you're ripping either version like Movie Wizard suggests, you may as well rip them all.

It's not THAT great of a film after all.

My girlfriend's brother is getting the two disk AND the four disk. For each movie. AND a boxed set when they come out. Each, if there are two.

Did I mention he might be insane? ;)

I'd go with Editman on this one. Rent the two, buy the four.

Guys,

I made the decision to pick up the 2 disk version last week. I weighed my options and decided that I had to watch LOTR again and soon! I was gonna try to hold out, but then I'd end up renting it over and over. For the price (got mine for $15 at Best Buy) it was worth it. I will probably go a little wild in Nov. and pick up the 4 disk one.

Thank you! Finally someone else who also knows how to play the big movie studios' money-scaming game of buying DVDs.

See? You end up buying both versions cos the movie has to be seen (again) now, so New Line wins! Do you really have to see the darn movie so many time, even November is only 3 months away?

What happens if a box set with the 2-disc versions of all 3 movies comes out *plus* an bonus disc of never-seen-before stuff? What would you do with the same title you are buying now?

Like the Jurassic Trilogy box set: I have to get JP & The Lost World again just to get that stupid bonus disc because 1) I got JP III after the extra disc offer expired & 2) I'm not even eligible cos I lived outside the US!

The way big movie studio exploiting the capacity of DVD and abusing the "SE release" stragegy really sucks. :upset:

It's not that I have to watch it so many times, but I would rent it a few times between now and Nov. I really liked the movie when I saw it in the theatre.

I am into commentaries and special features on DVDs so I am going to grab the Nov. release.

I don't think anyone is getting ripped off. Each of the LOTR releases offers something a little bit different, and it gives people the option of just getting the theatrical version or going for the extras, which is the stuff for the fans of the movie and the DVD junkies (and I'm afraid that I'm guilty of both). Just my opinions on the matter.

Open to any other comments...

I'll buy the 4-discs version but what I'm gonna miss from the 2-discs version are the trailers and tv spots. They should've included that in both versions because it's kind of a standard for a good DVD to have the theatrical trailers and tv spots.:upset:

Agree.

But IMO it doesn't even have to be a good DVD to have trailers and TV spots. Trailers and TV spots must be included on DVDs, or we should not buy them! (And I resent the fact that some of the greatest movies like Tootsie have crappy DVDs which doesn't even include its own trailers. Even one transferred from a faded scrathy film print is better than none!)
