View Full Version : 35mm trailer for Star Trek Generations: You wanna help get it online in High-Def???
bendermac 08-06-2005, 07:10 AM today i received the 35mm reel of the star trek generations trailer. as most of you (especially you star trek fans) know, the trailer was dropped from the dvd release for unknown reasons. the romur was that it has something to do with music rights. since the trailer only has music from star trek films this is the most lamest excuse not to inlcude the trailer. anyway, i have it now as a 35mm but getting this baby on a format i can work with, namely encode and post it here at movie-list wont be easy.
i do know that many of you want us to hunt down rare trailers and this one sure is rare. since a telecine job isn't cheap i want you to ask if you would support me getting this baby online for your and all other trailer fans.
i don't know yet how much money would be needed but i guess it will be around 100 - 200 euro. yes, telecine jobs are expensive ;) i surely will post a price in next week if i found out how much it will be.
well, it's up to you to get this running. i paid for the 35mm version and it looks pretty good :D
here a pic of a frame scaned by me ;) the dirt you see is from the scaner's glass and not from the 35mm.

bendermac 08-07-2005, 04:30 AM update
i've called yesterday with a local company who does telecine jobs and i was told that the price may around 50 euro, maybe less.
i gonna visit the company this week. what i'll get is a 1080p uncompressed master for the trailer and that means: forget everything you've seen before of the star trek 7 trailer :D
i really hope some of you guys and girls will help paying the bill for this baby. i know 50 euro ain't much, but i don't make that much money that i can simply drop 50 euro just for one trailer ;)
i'm counting on you :)
RoboDan 08-07-2005, 09:24 PM Hey!!! I'm in for sure! I just hope we have some other folks here on ML that can back up! Imagine we get so many people that it'll just be a buck a piece! ;) Now that's what I call love for the game! ;)

editman 08-07-2005, 09:30 PM I'll put in too.
Not a trekkie, but if it's really only gonna cost 50 euro ($80AU. I spent more than that buying OOP DVDs.) for a decent transfer, I will share the telecine fee just to show what a true Forum contributor is supposed to be, as opposed to those phony 'contributors'.
VeryShyGuy 08-08-2005, 01:42 AM I'm in with 5 EUR as well :).
Just tell me when you need 'em and where.
Best regards,
VSG
DrZed 08-08-2005, 04:58 AM Hi there.

Please share the name of the facility that will do a High Def
trailer 35mil transfer.
Sounds too good to be true . . but hope it is.
We're used to $800 [ in Atlanta ] to $1700 [ in New York ] USD per hour for 35 mil to HD
Thanks,
lebeljd 08-09-2005, 09:15 PM I'm willing to make a small donation, just let me know when you need it and how to proceed.
bendermac 08-10-2005, 08:09 AM for anyone who wishes to contribute money for the telecine, please do it via paypal. you can send the money to me using this address --> skyfilms@t-online.de
thank you all for your contribution :big grin:
@ captainceluloid
it wont help you if i give you the address since it's not a pro-house. the delivery output will be hdv and that is not recommend for real film distribution. besides, you had to ship your entire stock to germany ;)
and 800 dollars for one hour isn't that bad if it's done professionally.
bendermac 08-10-2005, 08:35 AM UPDATE
today i delivered the trailer to the facility. the telecine should be done next week. the person who will do the telecine will call me and then i can talk with when it's all done. this also means if you want to contribute money, i'll need it now ;)
bebbaboo 08-11-2005, 11:29 AM I just sent you $20. Can't wait to see the trailer!
lebeljd 08-11-2005, 12:25 PM I sent $10.00 via PayPal. Thanks for all your hard work and contributions!
KevLeviathan 09-04-2005, 04:17 PM This is exciting! Any updates for us bender? I'm can't wait, thanks for your contribution.
bendermac 09-06-2005, 01:23 PM Any updates for us bender?
yep, but not good ones :(
today i received the tape with the trailer and it looks bad. the contract was that i get a hdv at 24fps file but i only got it in dv and that one was even in pal. this happened because the company had problems with their equipment and so they ask another company to help out which they f*cked it up. the other problem was that it wasn't a real telecine. they recorded it with a dv cam from the projected screen  ok, if done right this can look pretty good but it will never look as good as a real telecine.
i also made a screenshot for you, so you can see how it looks like.
http://www.movie-list.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=3180
as you can see the picture isn't even straight and that is a big no no!!!
anyway, the company who originaly was hired to do the job gave me the money do the problems. i asked them if they can contact me when they setled their equiment problems and redo the whole thing.
so what does this mean for you trailer nerds? quite simple: we either forget this entire thing and see it this way: if we want real quality, then we have to hire real professionals and pay for the wanted quality.
the other thing we can do is this: we have to hire real professionals and pay for the wanted quality.this would mean a lot more money is needed. about 300 - 400 €, maybe less
what will you get? you get a real telecine taken by an arri laser scanner. yes the one they use for films to put them on dvd ;)
it's up to you folks
nontheless, a very special thank you for all members who contributed so far for our expirement :big grin:
editman 09-06-2005, 06:19 PM Hmmm... 50 Euros for a HD transfer DID sound too good to be true. :(
Hang on. Surely with more than one contributor to the 'experiment' you should have received more than 50 Euros, didn't you bender? bebbaboo put in $20(US I presume?) and so did I, that's $40US plus bits here and there. So how much is there left after paying the dodgy telecine, if there's any left?
(Not that I care about the money donated, but if you wanna do a true HD transfer - which hopefully costs only 300 Euros - at least give us an idea how much more to raise from this point forward.)
bendermac 09-06-2005, 08:11 PM Hmmm... 50 Euros for a HD transfer DID sound too good to be true. :(
yea, but it didn't work out as i hoped for :(
bebbaboo put in $20(US I presume?) and so did I
yes she did but i never received yours.
So how much is there left after paying the dodgy telecine, if there's any left?
all together it's 58,73 € :) this is all the money i've received from you guys :D i'd would've needed an extra of 25 € for the hdv tapedeck which i needed to rent for 2 hours. they gave to me for this price as i only needed it for 2 hours. 80min driving from store to home and back and 40 min for the setup and capturing. usually it would've cost 89 € for a whole day. at the end i didn't needed to pay for it since the file on the tape wasn't what i wanted ;)
i also contacted another company who does real telecine and asked them what it would cost to do the trailer. i hope i'll receive an answer tomorrow :) but don't it will be cheap, actually i guess it will be around 400 €.
editman 09-06-2005, 08:35 PM yes she did but i never received yours.
Oh yes you did. ;)
This email confirms that you sent 20.00 EUR to skyfilms@t-online.de.
So we can safely say we're back to square 1 now. Fair enough.
MOD Edit no hotlinking of email addresses ;)
bendermac 09-06-2005, 08:42 PM Oh yes you did. ;)
erm, then you must be ****** *******, because he was the only one who send 20 € which are now 18,87 € after paypal snatched their little part of the transaction ;)
sorry eddie, was my bad :embarasse
pascal 09-14-2005, 07:11 AM i found a company mabey
just try and ask them
www.dvcuts.com
bendermac 09-14-2005, 07:33 AM i already found a new company and they made me an offer which is really good. i gonna call them this week for an apointment. i'll let you guys know.
btw, this new company is a real pro-house so we can expect the quality we're looking for. nonetheless i gonna ask for a sample work so i going to see what they produce ;)
so stay tuned for a new update in 1 or 2 weeks ;)
Movieman 10-26-2005, 01:15 AM Any new news on this? I was eager to see how it turned out.
bendermac 11-08-2005, 04:49 AM sorry folks for the delay of an updated news, which wasn't my fault
yesterday i called with the company again and thy told me that they where ready for the scanning and so i received an offer. this offer knocked me down for good. the price for the setup of the machine and scanning at 2k res would be 887,50 € + tax :freak: now you can say "why do 2k res, why not do something below?" you're right, but that below would "only" be pal res (720x576) and the last offer for that was 50,- € + tax + shipping.
the quality would be like you see on new trailers for example on warner dvds.
i'm surely not going to ask you guys to pay 900 € for trailer, nore would i wanna pay for that. put the money for better use i say. but standard-res would nice too.
so it's up you how we work this out: we either drop the ball or we do a dvd res version, which would be good as there is no other real dvd source out there ;)
those who contributed, it's your call :) i'd say "let's do it anyway, even it's only dvd res" :D
Jean-Pierre Bazinet 11-08-2005, 05:29 AM I agree. Go with the DVD res.
bebbaboo 11-08-2005, 08:18 AM I'm sure we can all come up with a bit more money to make this happen. Just let us know. Also, can you translate that into $ so this dumb American can know exactly what we're talking about?
bendermac 11-08-2005, 08:48 AM we're talking about $1.100 + tax + shipping + data storage
Mark Strube 11-08-2005, 03:37 PM Is this DVD res anamorphic?
editman 11-08-2005, 03:41 PM So, let me get this straight: the DVD res will be in PAL, which means once it's transferred you still have to do go through the re-adjustment to get around the PAL speedup? Or are they going to do the telecine 24f progressive scan?
For to do the 2k transfer, you need around 100 members donating ~$20US each. I don't know we had that many people donating last time.
More importantly, are we absolutely certain that we can trust these people that they will give us a decent transfer, unlike those crooks you dealt with last time which outsourced the job to some bonzos?
I say do the DVD res too. But I wanna make sure that my money is well-spent and actually get good results this time.
bendermac 11-08-2005, 03:56 PM the scanned file will be a bit more then 720x576. i have to crop it all myself. it will be native 24fps progressive. but i can make either a pal or a ntsc res version. i dunno if it's anamorphic, but i'll surely ask if they get the contract.
as for the quality, they assured me it's top notch. they don't wanna have 1000 dollar for nothing if you do a 2k res scanning ;)
editman 11-08-2005, 04:17 PM as for the quality, they assured me it's top notch. they don't wanna have 1000 dollar for nothing if you do a 2k res scanning ;)
But you're talking about the 2k scenario. (If a grant can't get it right you might as well sue them for fraud.)
What about the €50 DVD-res transfer (which is most likely what you're getting)? When you say similar to Warner Bros trailers quality (mind you, those are anamorphic), is it just an assuption or are those their actual words?
(And hopefully they're not referring to the quality of, say, the Constantine international trailer. :P )
DrZed 04-06-2006, 07:23 AM DVD resolution is absolutely ok with me.
I didn't contribute that much money anyway.
Greetz
DrZed
lebeljd 04-06-2006, 06:17 PM DVD resolution would be OK with me too. Do we need another round of contributions? I could throw a few more dollars in if needed.
