The new format will use a blue laser for recording and playback. A single-sided 12 centimetre Blu-Ray disc stores 27GB of computer data, records 13 hours of broadcast TV or holds 2 hours of High Definition video.
cool...I was hoping they will choose Blue Laser Tech.... more data, more HIGH Res Video...:big grin:
This means we can have the LOTR (all 3 movies) in extended version in 1 DVD =).....
and and all the prOn in 1 Disc

Existing CD and DVD players and recorders will not be able to use Blu-Ray discs.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Oh well i knew it was gona happen some day, ok guys now its time to sell your DVD collection! :(
no, don't get all excited. it isn't a replacement, it's an advancement. dvd will still exist, you'll just need to update your player---blue ray players will be backward compatible with your current dvds. in the future, 2 disc dvd sets like Fight Club will be as laughable as 5 or 6 disc laserdisc sets...

like that site says, Toshiba says no for this now. Plus... the governments have to say YES to this new format. I hope blu-ray doesn't go ahead. It would probably go the way of beta.
