Even with 3183 theaters (biggest opening of all 4), Saw IV made just estimate $32,110,000 opening weekend.

Just one year ago Saw III reach $33,610,391 from 3,167 theaters and two year ago Saw II $31,725,652 from 2,949.

End of this franchise is close? I don't think so. I've heard about Saw V and Saw VI...

I started to hate this right after second part, which sucked. So did third. Imo they should have stopped with 1st. Now there´s gonna be 12 of them, lol (well, 4 trilogies, makes sense). Too bad that those 32mils is still enough considering movies budget

Yep. Third one has biggest budget... 10 mils. I think fourth budget was similar.

Not so good?? How can you say that?? For a HORROR movie on its FOURTH film to make that much on its opening weekend is unheard of. End of the franchise? Not even close. This opening just re-affirms that the franchise is running stronger than any horror franchise ever.

Nowadays, box office really doesn't matter anymore.
DVD Sales will be much higher, and will make up for any low box office numbers.

Like I've said, I don't think it's the end of the franchise. But the opening is not so good, because is smaller than 3rd one, even with more theaters and higher ticket price.

Yes. You're right.

DVD Sales will be much higher, and will make up for any low box office numbers.

Not anytime. Check e.g. "The Invasion". Even DVD and TV will not help Joel Silver with get back his money.

But the movie's opening was never expected to top the third or even the second as horror series always continue to decline in Box Office. Most had it pegged for maybe 25-29 M tops. The third was the end of the trilogy and was marketed as such so the hype was at its peak. This film hardly had any hype behind it so I think it surprised many including the studio that it even opened as well as it did on name value alone. Just check some of the write ups for the opening.

You write "horror series always continue to decline in BO". Saw don't. Second had better result than first, and third better than previous two. And the tracking just before opening was higher - even 35 mils.

And now. Even BOMojo says 'Saw IV' Loses Little Blood. I think it's about not so good opening.

BTW. Official result - $31,756,764 is just 31k better than Saw II opening.

Right... the key word here is "little". Meaning it hardly lost any popularity from the previous Saw openings.

Listen, I'm not even a big Saw fan. Just giving credit where credit is due. All I'm saying is that for a FOURTH movie in a franchise with no key gimmick, it exceeded most industry expectations. I mean, what reasons would anyone expect for it to open higher than it did? By all accounts, it should've opened even lower.

BOM sums it up...

"Saw IV's opening was a testament to the brand's strength, as it is rare for a horror sequel to maintain most of its predecessors' theatrical potency, and distributor Lionsgate's exit polling suggested that 90 percent of the audience had seen the previous three movies. The picture's main selling point was solely that it was the latest Saw. Other than the promise of more grisly puzzles, no new hook was presented in the marketing campaign and the slogan simply read "If it's Halloween, it must be Saw."
