Unforgiven - western movie(s) talk

I just watched this Clint Eastwood western movie again, this time on the new 2 disc DVD =) and I finally understood why this movie is so great and powerful. Last time I watched this I was only 13 so I guess age does really matter what movie you like =P

Unforgiven (1992) (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0105695) is a very powerful and moral western movie. It is actually the 1st time I have seen a western movie where the characters actually have human emotions and are very natural. We are usually shown by hollywood that cowboys are simply dumb gunslingers accommodating the MTV generation.... like American Outlaws (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0244000) which is a load of a crap movie...

Aside from being a moral and powerful movie, Unforgiven is also a very good "anti-western" movie, where the old west is shown as dark and dirty....... which is clearly shown in the photography..

to sum up the essence of the movie...... "We all have it coming, kid" .... I suppose we all have it coming.. no ?

If u still have not seen this movie, I highly suggest watching this "metaphorical western" movie and see for yourself what I am talking about. If you have seen this movie already, watch it again =)

This movie really deserved the Best Picture it got in 1992 and is now one of my favorite westerns aside from Tombstone (1993) (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0108358)

Woohoo!!!

I'm glad to see that so many people are now opening up to the "Great" films of our time. Unforgiven is definetely one of the best Westerns ever produced, and rightfully so. It basically turned the genre upside down, giving the audience exactly what they DIDN't expect, but making it work.

Even though I'm more for the films along the likes of Tombstone (I love ensemble casts), Unforgiven is truly a work of a master, and actually one of the only Clint Eastwood films that I can truly say holds something true to my heart!!!

GO WATCH THE MOVIE! ;)

Ahh yes.. i remember getting the Clint Eastwood Western Trilogy on VHS on one christmas night and very much enjoyed them. Should replace it with DVDs

U ppl? Have u watched many westerns or like em? I like the older ones and one of my favourites (and in my top 20 list) is The Magnificent Seven. An excellent movie with a huge cast and perfect story. Probably was the first movie for me to use music during action scenes perfectly that draws you straight into the environment.
ANyone seen The Professionals? Thats how westerns should be!!!

Have Unforgiven and enjoyed it but was more of a comedy to me with the killings and jokes. Didn't have fast paced scenes nor action like my other favourites. Story was there but progressed too slowly. My fav scene was the "welcoming the duck" scene. THat scene felt it had the most passion in it. Gene can make a masterpiece come alive... oh wait.. he did the same thing with The Quick and the Dead. Hmmm... gotta get that movie.
ANyway.. still... Unforgiven deserved those Oscars. Oh yeah!! They don't make westerns like they used to.

I was never a fan of Magnificent Seven only because I'm a big Kurosawa buff. Seven Samurai was a great film. Magnificent Seven was just something Hollywood needed, just so we can say "We can do it to".

Which is quite funny, since Seven Samurai was Kurosawa's homage to our Westers! ;)

The Magnificent Seven is a brilliant western. I had wanted to see it for ages because I had heard a lot of good things about it. They kept showing it on the tele but without advertising it I kept missing it, so eventually I got it as a blind buy. It didn't dissapoint.
BTW can anyone tell me what the sequels were like. I got the DVD full price but the next week I found the DVD box set of all 5 films for £25. Didn't get it, but want to find out if that was a mistake?

Tomb Stone was one of the first DVD's that I ever bought. I love that film. Kurt Russel was amazing, Val Kilmer became Doc Hollywood, and the gunfight at the OK coral is one of the best action scenes anywhere.

I thought that The Quick and the dead was an extremely enjoyable film.

My all time favourite western though has to be Once Upon A Time In The West. I haven't seen it in ages and can't remember too much but I do remember it keeping me on the edge of my seat in a way few other westerns have.

suddenly u guys talk about western movies with super dooper action scenes.... that was exectly not the point i wanted to make

Unforgiven is "anti-western" just like when we refer to a movie as "anti-war".... it depicts the western cowboys not as action packed gunslingers but are packed with characters that have human emotions and imperfections.... :evil: :evil: :evil:

i was hoping to make this thread not as a western movie thread but as to show my oppinion how Clint Eastwood changed how western movies can be made... :evil: :evil: :evil:

oh man... the sequals to TMS were just so LAME!! I weren't even going to call them sequals cose they are totally different movies. I still see TMS as a stand alone movie. The end is so true and ppl of the world should follow it

Once Upon A time in the west was great too. Very old movie. GOtta check if its on DVD at my local stores.

The Magnificant Seven is a Hollywood remake of Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai". Period.

and what a perfect remake it is. They should more remakes like those 2.
BUt i'd take TMS over TSS only cose of music and interest! But both are ideaitical stories and scripts
