View Full Version : my Daredevil review
redbear 02-13-2003, 02:13 AM well...we got Daredevil in today. i have anticipating this only for the Hulk and Xmen2 trailers that came with it. The movie itself was just ok. this was a typical ben affleck performance. he didn't bring any character to the role of daredevil, and therefore, it suffered. not that i was really thinking he was going to do a stellar performance anyway. "the man who loses everything and becomes a hero to save the world" character is getting very old. jennifer garner was good for the role of elektra. i could amost feel her feelings throughout the movie. michael duncan clarke and colin farrel were again, ok. both are good actors but the rols they were given could have been devloped alittle better. the script spends to much time on daredevil development and not enough on elektra or bullseye. the action sequences were poorly shot and not thought out. therefore, they go too fast. one second DD is wounded..within 2 minutes, he had beaten down a 350lb man and has won the main battle.that's right, the main battle only lasts three to five minutes...heck, the little game of "tag" between DD and elektra when they first meet is better than the fight between DD and his arch nemisis, kingpin. the battle between bullseye and DD was a little better but was also a little goofy. there just seems to be a never ending supply of organ pipes in this little new york church.
the effects were average. the use of CG was good. there were times that you knew it was CG but couldn't tell. and then there were times when it was just overwhelming apparent (bad in other words...)
overall: i give it 6/10. the plot could have been devloped better, the characters could have been devloped better and the fight sequences could have been better. i believe that the studios rushed this one out just a little before it was ready. it could have been a really good movie.
trailergod 02-13-2003, 03:44 AM ok.. this movie sucks.....
the movie makers made a big miscast with Ben...
looks gay just like Hulk.... ruining comics good name :freak: :freak: :freak:
i just hope they stop making movies based on comics, and if they do make, they better have a damnn good script and director....
Mark Strube 02-13-2003, 02:48 PM Looks like all the movies based on comics have been good so far... till Daredevil. X-Men - GOOD Spider-Man - GOOD Blade - GOOD! Hollywood is just trying to cash in on the based-on-comic book hype.
I enjoyed it.
Check my link for the full review.
radstar 02-20-2003, 12:39 AM i thought it wuz very enjoyable. the movie kept me interested the whole time. ben affleck did indeed do a pretty good job. i give it a 4/5 :big grin: (cool! a new smiley!) :big grin: :big grin:

You're pretty much right, Stef. I don't think there's really one movie with Ben as the leading star I like, to-date.
I do like Good Will Hunting and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back though...
I can endure Armageddon. Pearl Harbor is a snore fest, and I normally don't doze off during movies!...
Haven't seen Sum of All Fears but will check out once the Jack Ryan DVD box-set comes out.
Haven't seen Daredevil and of course will check out once it's released Down Under.

Daredevil ***half.
Fun comic book movie. Affleck does good.
Sum Of all Fears *****
After Clear And Present Danger it's the best Ryan film. Affleck did surprisingly well.
Pearl Harbor *
Affleck was Okayish. ?Film wasn't
Armageddon ****
Excellant, exciting disater movie. Affleck plays the latest heart throb. He didn't try to act, but he did fine for the type of film.
Changing Lanes *
Terrible Film. Affleck was brilliant in it though.
Why do people hate him so much? He's not he best actor around, but there are also much much worse actors.
trailergod 02-20-2003, 10:15 AM Changing Lanes ... IMO is a very good movie.... it has more substance and value than those pop corn flicks he made.....
blugh 02-20-2003, 01:06 PM All right, here we go.
Daredevil 4.5/5. I really liked it. Not neccesarily because of Affleck, but he didn't hurt the movie.
Sum Of All Fears 1.5/5. Boooooooooooring. Complete butchering of the book. Affleck is way too arrogant to be believable as Jack Ryan.
Pearl Harbour 2/5. One great action sequnecs does not justify a poorly written chick flick. Affleck wasn't bad, but wasn't good either.
Armageddon 3.5/5. Great destruction sequences, and Affleck does a good enough job, despite havng no chemistry with Liv Tyler

Like you said....BLOCKBUSTER. This guy must be doing something right. All of those movies you listed have raked in some really big bucks. So, I think you are in the minority there, my friend (maybe not in the minority in these forums, but in general).

I hated it. I don't mind an unbelievable story when there's pace of some sort to the film, (satire, tension, whatever) but CL had unlikeable characters in a slow and extremely unbelievable story. It was the same story as Homer Simpson Vs George Bush.:D

.... yah like matt damon :freak:
blugh 02-21-2003, 08:35 AM WHOA!! Don't be knocking Matt Damon. You see, unlike Ben, he makes blockbusters that are actually good, such as Ocean's 11 or Bourne Identity.
popcopy 02-21-2003, 12:47 PM Sum of All Fears- better left as a book...the movie was a HUGE flop.
as far as daredevil is concerned: haven't heard too much buzz (generally) about it since it's release. Never a good sign. Looks like i'm just going to wait until it comes out on DVD so i can waste $3.00 on a probably horrible movie rather than $8.00.
ben affleck hasn't done anything good since goodwill hunting... and even then matt damon carried that one. As far as that issue is concerned: at least damon has decent acting skills to back up a pretty face.

i'm sorry i can't stand his looks.... since good will hunting and dogma- he irritates me! so yah it could be just me but i think he's the worst and the most ugly actor on this planet. :boring:
:P
Stormwalker 02-23-2003, 01:26 AM hrmm the old ben affleck debate... :)
i never used to like ben affleck.. i dunno he just seemed like a wanker :) but after watching jay and silent bob my opinion of him changed.. he accepted a role.. for a friend, literally took the piss out of himself on the screen all for a friend... and thats something you rarely see in hollywood..
as for sum of all fears.. after reading "the bear and the dragon" i was impressed by it, i think people got to caught up in the whole but it was "harrison ford, now its affleck in a story that is before ford was head of cia. blah blah blah..." just accept it for what it is.. you dont here people whinging about how in james bond, they had a laser gun in moonraker but now in the new movies he doest have that technology or the fact that the character of bond has been played by 5 different actors.. you could nitpick if you want.. but most people wont...
as for pearl harbour.. WELL.. some cool trailers.. got me all excited.. and im with the rest of you.. it was pretty lame.. not because of acting/story etc.. it was just overhyped people were trying to compare it with titanic.. bad idea, everyone got all excitied and then wondered why it failed to deliver, its like Episode One, remember the hype.. two days after it came out.. everyone was still excitied (im talking in general, if you didnt like it after the first screening.. good for you.. you dont have to defend yourself.. i can see the starwars fanatics.. just pouncing on the reply button :P) saying how good it was.. then 2 weeks later the hype died down, they took a step back and went.. jeez.. that wasnt anything like i thought it was.. what a JIP!
sure affleck is not the greatest actor.. but would you have preferred ashton kutcher?

I loved The Sum Of All Fears, but I think that Alec Baldwin was the best Ryan so far. Ford did well, but he just looked to old to be playing Ryan so early in the series.
popcopy 02-26-2003, 03:22 PM yeah, i do think he has a pretty face...i'm a sucker for that guy :)
Jean-Pierre Bazinet 03-03-2003, 03:52 AM It's a bit off-topic, but this thread started as a Daredevil review and I just watched it and wanted to share some thoughts:
I ended up enjoying it ALLOT more than I thought I would.
I've never liked Ben Affleck, but he did a good job here.
The cheesy dialogue in the trailer is actually supposed to be cheesy in the movie, so it's okay.
The action scenes are pretty good, the story gave enough background info, but left enough in the air to keep us wanting more in a possible sequel (and in the Elektra spin-off).
(oh... and the effects used when we see Daredevil's point of view were fantastic!)
Bullseye was great fun (even though I hate that stupid thing on his forehead), and Kingpin (although under-developed) was setup well for sequels also.
It's called Daredevil, but may as well be "Daredevil and Elektra" as ALLOT of the screentime and story are based around her as well. But I liked her too, so that's okay.
My only real gripe with the movie was the overuse of CGI. Why does Daredevil have to be able to jump 100 yards in the air, grab a clothesline and spin around on ceiling fans? Can't he just jump like a normal person and beat the crap out of people? I wouldn't have liked it any less if that were the case.
And the old 'near death, but gets a new burst of energy and takes down the bad guy' thing (ala: Hulk Hogan) is getting on my nerves. Let the guy be in pain, and show it. He can work around it.
Overall... much better than I expected.
Allot of fun. Great action.
But less than perfect.
4 / 5

I think its what the fans expected, in the comic hes jumping around like crazy so its expected in the movie aswell.
what i was disapointed in was the fact that he went after that rap guy and killed him. I dont ever remember Daredevil killing ppl. Time after time he went out of his way to protect ppl even bad guys from guys like Wolverine and Punisher.
So I think it was a really bad call making him an avenging angel type of guy, cuz he never was in the comic (to my knowlidge).
Sure he comes from Hells Kitchen and run sin the darker parts of New York but he was never a dark character always a good and just person believing in the justice system not vigilantism.
