they look sweet and fast yup, 64 bit and they have been announced already last week :big grin:

funny thing is that the CPU of the MAC is made by IBM... so its like a Cats and Dogs mating.... internally the new MACs exactly works like a Windows PC but without Windows....hehehe

anyway, dont worry the PC will also be 64 bit this September (AMD is just waiting Windows XP 64 bit) .. and its gonna be CHEAPER !!!

and it will work on 32bit and 64bit software

As for the G5....hmmm. looking good. (though macs always LOOK good) I'm not a mac guy. I have never been a big fan of macs and from experiance, they crash just as much as a PC.

That all being said, I know I will have to work with macs at Sheridan next year and years after that. Even though I prefer a PC I'm intrested to see how these things run and wouldn't mind working with one if I have to :)

$2,000 for a 2Ghz desktop computer? And people wonder why I prefer PCs.

You find me a 2gig machine that runs as smooth, does as good graphics, and doesn't crash for under 2 grand, and we'll talk.

Ah, so you don't like Macs either, huh? That "doesn't crash" comment kinda gives it away. :evil:

Although to be fair, I haven't had much exposure to Macs since the original iMac. I did like the handle on the top of those. That made it really easy to pick them up and throw them. Thank God I no longer have to work with those crash-happy pieces of junk, and I haven't had to touch any Mac in over three years.

Oh, forgive me. I lost my manners. Macs don't crash. They bomb. Sorry about that. ;)

Of course, before I worked with the iMac I had the joy of working on a PowerMac, which wasn't any better.

And considering the number of complaints I have heard from people at work who use G3s and G4s, they don't sound like a whole lot has improved. The only PC people who are complaining, on the other hand, are those that are stuck with ancient 166Mhz machines.

And, oh yeah, we just bought 10 new Dell P4 2Ghz machines with flat panel monitors for $1,100 each about two and a half months ago, and everyone who has one of the new ones absolutely loves them. I wish I had one. Those suckers are FAST!

Oh, I forgot to mention that our photographer refuses to touch the Macs, and will only process his pictures on a PC, even though we have Macs and PCs running the same version of Photoshop. So Macs must not be THAT great at working with photos. :whistle:

Well well well it looks like I've found someone like minded here....I am always told macs are "industry standard" and what are used for photoshoping, digital art, whatever. But I haven't found a good reason why. "Just because"? yeah right....
Maybe it just happened....dunno.

Honestly though...if it's stable, fast and easy to use...then really they should have no problem making me love both PC and Mac. I'll never fully switch.

No... I hate grade 6's. I don't have a problem with PC users, and they're what I have at my disposal for the most part, but I will always take a Mac given the choice.

I subscribe to a magazine called "MaximumPC," which keeps me up to date on the latest hardware and software in the PC world. In their March issue (which I received in mid-February), they took various components and tested them to see which was faster. Among the tests was "Who makes the fastest dual-processor platform - Intel, AMD, or Apple?"

"First off, you might be wondering why we didn't run a single-proc showdown," the article says. "The answer is simple: The fastest Macs run to CPUs, and we wanted to give our apple-cheeked bretheren the best opportunity to strut their wares."

The Apple computer was a G4 (fastest at the time) with two 1.25 Ghz processors and OSX 10.2 and had 2 GB memory.

The AMD computer had two Athlon MP 2400+ processors with Windows XP and 2 GB memory.

The Intel computer had two 2.8 Ghz Xeon processors with Windows XP and 2 GB memory.

They tested two games on each computer, Quake3 and Jedi Knight. They also tested three "graphics and design" programs, Photoshop, Premiere, and Lightwave.

The results:

"We came to one conclusion very quickly after reviewing the numbers: Mac people who scream that their Apples are faster than PCs are so full of crap, they could double as septic tanks."

Unless you really want to know the pitiful game results for the Mac, I will skip those and go directly to applications.

For Photoshop, all computers had to run 12 filters on a 9 MB file, and they were timed from the time they started to the time it ended. The Intel completed the task in 34 seconds. The AMD completed the task in 35 seconds. The Mac completed the task in 60 seconds.

For Premiere, an MPEG movie was exported to Quicktime. The Intel computer took 328 seconds. The AMD computer took 335 seconds. The Apple computer took 430 seconds.

The lightwave test recorded how long it took to render a single frame using the standard raytrace Lightwave included with the software. The Intel completed the task in 55 seconds. The AMD completed the task in 88.3 seconds, and the Mac finished in 105.3 seconds.

After looking at the numbers, you have to wonder what is so great about Macs when it comes to graphics and design.

You have two cars to choose from. Both will get you from point A to point B. The first is about half the cost, will go faster, and you can get gas at virtually any gas station. The second is more expensive, won't go as fast, and is only able to stop at certain gas stations that are not conveniently placed and where the price of gas is higher than the average of the other gas stations. Which would you drive?

The ITC considered that there was insufficient evidence to support the claim "world's fastest, most powerful personal computer". Furthermore, it shared one viewer's doubt that the claim could be substantiated at all because, as evidence for and against the claim had shown, computers were constantly being updated and had many different applications and benchmarks. It reminded the BACC of the importance to obtain solid evidence for such absolute claims. It judged that the advertising was misleading and required that it should not be re-shown in its current form.

Background

An advertisement for the new Apple Power Mac G5 claimed it was "the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer".

Issue

Viewers complained that the advertising was misleading because the main claim was based on the results of limited tests in which the specification of the computers used was configured to give Apple the best results.

Assessment

Prior to broadcast, the BACC's independent IT expert raised some concerns, which the advertiser responded to. The BACC was satisfied with the advertiser's further substantiation and approved the commercial.

The advertiser provided the ITC with evidence which it claimed showed that the tests, carried out by an independent third party, were "fair and even".

Due to the technical nature of the advertiser's response, the ITC asked the BACC to refer the complaints and the response to the BACC's expert. He found that the claim was not supported by independent reviews and that at best "the G5 was generally as fast as the best Intel-based workstations currently available".



Conclusion

Complaints upheld. Breach of ITC Code Rule 5.2.1.

those are the only 2 good deals in the computer business

besides I noticed that lately I don't even use any applications requiring the full speed of my computer, I mean it's sort of pointless to buy the fastest computer if you don't use it to run some cutting edge software that needs it. Yeah, 2Ghz for word processing is friggin smart especially if it's a Celoron processor:big grin:
As far as processors go just buy AMD - cheaper, faster, more reliable, more efficient, just invest in a heat sink and a good fan
