View Full Version : Schwarzenegger for Governor?
radstar 08-07-2003, 12:15 AM Schwarzenegger Announces Gubernatoria Bid
LOS ANGELES - Arnold Schwarzenegger ended the suspense Wednesday and said he would run in California's recall election, awarding Republicans his marquee value in their campaign to oust Gov. Gray Davis. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein ruled out a run, labeling the election "more and more like a carnival every day."
Schwarzenegger's announcement came as a surprise; advisers had said in recent days that was leaning against running in the Oct. 7 election.

HAHAHA!!!
:big grin:
trailergod 08-07-2003, 02:13 AM well why not.. :)
USA had an actor president for 8 long years (Pres. Reagan) and IMO he did a very good job and probably one of the best presidents america ever had (ending the 70s recession, ending the cold war, Star Wars military budget... etc)
but that was Reagan and this is Schwarzenegger ...hehehe
but i think he can win... will he?
ohh and he can never be president coz he is not naturally born american.. right?
hehehe

But it was the announcement by Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican and the star of the "Terminator" movies, that may have come as the biggest surprise.
Schwarzenegger, 56, announced his decision during a taping of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (news - Y! TV)," calling it the toughest he's made since deciding to get a bikini wax in 1978.
"The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing," he said. "The man that is failing the people more than anyone is Gray Davis."
Schwarzenegger's advisers had said in recent days that he was leaning against putting his name on the Oct. 7 election ballot because of opposition from his wife, journalist Maria Shriver.
Schwarzenegger told Leno that he's not afraid of Davis allies attacking him as "a womanizer" or "a terrible person." "I know that they're going to throw everything at me," he said.
Gaumont 08-07-2003, 06:22 AM i think he will win and i think he will do a good job.
Marcus 08-07-2003, 08:49 AM You know what else? (http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/08/07/calif.candidates/index.html)
Gary Coleman is running. Larry Flynt is running too (Hustler magazine publisher if I'm right?) Gallagher (comedian) is running too.
what....the....hell? I'm not HUGE on politics - they're fine but get boring sometimes. Though THIS...this should be intresting. I want all these people in the same room. Should be intresting :P
Schwarzenegger imo though has a good chance. People know who he is and know that he works until he gets results.
chizzace 08-07-2003, 12:40 PM I live in California, and Schwarzenegger is getting tons of support from all the people in my town. I think he definitely has a good chance. If he does become governor, it could spell the end of the Terminator franchise and the last time we see Arnie kick some robot ***...
heh, He will be (if succed) just one puppet more...
the_bronz 08-07-2003, 01:19 PM Ah-nuld for president!!

On Wednesday, Gary Coleman (news), the star of the 1980s sitcom, "Diff'rent Strokes," plunked down $3,500 in Alameda County and declared himself a candidate for governor of California. Current governor Gray Davis is facing a recall election Oct. 7.

blugh 08-07-2003, 06:15 PM Ah-nuld will win, because everyone's asking themselves, "why not?" and they can't come up with a valid reason to not vote for Arnie. Which would honestly be pretty cool, provided he officially changes the name of the position to "The Governator".
That would be the hitch.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger disclosed on Sunday that whatever shortcomings he might have as potential governor of California, personal wealth is not among them -- he made more than $50 million in two years.
Schwarzenegger's tax returns, made public at a news conference, showed he earned $31 million in 2000 and paid more than $10 million in state and federal taxes. Income dipped slightly in 2001 to $26.1 million, with $9.3 million paid in taxes.
He also made charitable donations of close to $5 million in those two years, including $1.1 million to Proposition 49, the voter initiative that he successfully backed which increases funding for after school programs.
Asked if the Austrian-born star would be the richest California governor yet, campaign legal counsel Colleen McAndrews said his wealth far surpassed that of past governors Jerry Brown, George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson and of incumbent Gray Davis. "I don't think any of them have had substantial wealth," she said.
Most of Schwarzenegger's income came from the film business.
The "Terminator" actor owns stock in, among other companies, Starbucks, PepsiCo, Coca Cola and Roto Rooter and has millions of dollars in municipal bonds and real estate investments.
In his campaign appearances in the run-up to the unprecedented recall vote on Oct. 7, the Austrian-born Republican has insisted he is so rich that he cannot fall prey to special interests. If elected, his investments would be managed by a trust.
this means also no more ARNIE movies !!!!!!!!!!!!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=7&u=/ap/20030812/ap_on_en_tv/recall_equal_time_1
LOS ANGELES - Arnold Schwarzenegger (news)'s foray into California's gubernatorial recall election poses a dilemma for broadcasters who might be tempted to show his films during the race: Doing so would allow rival candidates to demand equal time.
For that reason, broadcasters in California will likely not air Schwarzenegger movies such as "Total Recall" and the "Terminator" or a repeat of a "Diff'rent Strokes" episode with Gary Coleman (news) for the next few months.
Cable channels are not covered by the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites)'s equal-time provision, which in the past kept reruns of "Death Valley Days" off the air while Ronald Reagan (news) ran for president. A repeat of a "Saturday Night Live (news - Y! TV)" episode featuring Don Novello, aka Father Guido Sarducci, on cable, for instance, would not trigger the provision.
Novello, Schwarzenegger, Coleman and more than 240 other candidates have filed to run in the Oct. 7 election to recall Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites). The equal-time rule kicks in on Wednesday, when the state is expected to officially certify the list of candidates.
The major networks do not have a Schwarzenegger movie scheduled over the next two months, but local stations can make their own decisions about what to air.
The National Association of Broadcasters sent an alert to its California members reminding them about the consequences of the equal-time provision. The provision would also apply to stations in neighboring states that reach a sizable number of California voters.
"It's doubtful Arnold's movies will be shown on local broadcast stations between now and the election," said Dennis Wharton, an NAB spokesman.
blugh 08-12-2003, 09:06 PM Actually, I think a really rich guy became governor of Massachusetts and wound up doing a great job, he got rid of the state SUV's and replaced them with more efficient cars, gave his salary to the state, good stuff...

Wiretrip 08-13-2003, 04:08 PM Why not? The Governor of Minnesota is an Ex-pro wrestler.
Hulkster 08-13-2003, 11:11 PM I'd rather see him make movies, but if being Governor is what he truely wants, than I support and resepect his decision.
Stormwalker 08-14-2003, 10:36 AM i think he should at least finish of the terminator series now that they have left it soo open for a sequel.
I don't know how much more insulting of his famous lines I can take! They don't work as political slogans!
trailergod 08-24-2003, 02:45 PM http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=511&ncid=703&e=1&u=/ap/20030824/ap_on_el_gu/schwarzenegger_s_father_1
VIENNA, Austria - It's just a tiny typewritten line tucked away in an immense archive, but it sheds further light on the Nazi past of Arnold Schwarzenegger's father.
The brief entry in one of millions of documents stored at the Austrian State Archives shows that Gustav Schwarzenegger, the late father of the film star now running for governor of California, was a volunteer member of the Sturmabteilung, or SA — the notorious Nazi storm troopers also known as brownshirts.
The father's Nazi Party membership and combat record in the German army are not new, and his son's dismay about it is well known. The revelations of SA membership that emerged a week ago add another strand to the murky story.
The "SA 1.5.1939" listing shows that the elder Schwarzenegger joined May 1, 1939, the year after Germany annexed Austria and six months after the brownshirts played a crucial role in the bloody Kristallnacht riots.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which in 1990 investigated Gustav Schwarzenegger's wartime past at his son's request, plans to conduct new research before the Oct. 7 California recall election to establish what the father's unit did, said Rabbi Marvin Hier.
Whatever it finds out, "We will give it to Arnold, then to the public," Hier told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from the center's Los Angeles headquarters. "Whatever the record shows, so may it show. Should that record have any bearing on Arnold Schwarzenegger himself? In my opinion, absolutely not."
The Schwarzenegger campaign had no immediate comment.
The Wiesenthal Center didn't find the storm trooper reference in its 1990 investigation because that record was sealed until last year, 30 years after Gustav Schwarzenegger's death in 1972.
The new information was "negative," though SA membership is not considered a crime in itself, as membership in the Gestapo or the paramilitary SS would be, Hier said.
"We know what the SA and the Nazi Party stood for," he said. "Arnold knows this, and he's not proud of the fact that his father was a member of the Nazi Party and that his father was a member of the SA. This is a matter of deep embarrassment, but Arnold cannot be judged by his father."
so now they have to find all the skeletons in the closet..
but this should not be such a big deal, i mean a fathers mistakes or past has nothing to do with his children... right?
my grandfather and my uncle were SS officers, but its not a big deal, they were just doin their job
radstar 08-24-2003, 03:52 PM omg! frickin politics....
