I don't think that it's only the effects house that makes visual effects. But it's the director's vision that establishes this virtual reality, and then it comes to the digital artisits to digitize that vision.

Personally, my favourite director when it comes to visual effects is Steven Speilberg. Visual effects should help to convey the story, which is something Speilberg understands very well.

Take Minority Report and A.I. for example. These movies were very heavy in visual effects, and yet, you never stop while watching the movie spoting this or that scene to be unrealistic.

Others I like are Jumanji (those animals were CGI), The Perfect Storm (water) and Deep Blue Sea (again water).

A nice trivia about ILM; in 1991, ILM took the 3 nominations for the Academy's "Best Achievement in Visual Effects". Nominated films were "Terminator 2 : Judgement Day", "BackDraft" and "Hook". The Oscar went to T-2.

I'd say the most WOW I got from ILM was when I saw the whole rocketpack sequence in Minority Report. That said, I think their best work was Pirates, and I'd give them a very good shot at the Oscar.

ilm worked only on t2 and t3. on s.t. there where only a few shots made by ilm because sony pictures imageworks couldn't do in the timeframe they had.
