View Full Version : TLOTR: ROTK theatrical trailer

Trailer Confirmed by USAToday!

USAToday is reporting that the first theatrical trailer for The Return of the King will, as previously reported, show up before New Line Cinema's 'Secondhand Lions.' The twist is that 'Lions' opens this week and the trailer will not show with the film until September 26th. The promotion for 'Secondhand Lion's' states that it is the best 'family film' since Finding Nemo, so I imagine we won't be seeing anything too graphic as far as the 3 minutes Return of the King trailer is concerned.

That's what I hated. The ending to FOTR was so great. I really wanted them to hunt some orc at the beggining of TTT!!! All they did is trail them.

Right at the spot where the music was building, they were getting closer. I thought there should have been a short fight right there. It would have been perfect. But Noooooo. NO hunting orcs. ;P Bleh. .

Actually... they did hunt Orcs

hunt (hnt)
v. hunt·ed, hunt·ing, hunts
To pursue (game) for food or sport
To search through (an area) for prey: hunted the ridges.
To make use of (hounds, for example) in pursuing game.
To pursue intensively so as to capture or kill: hunted down the escaped convict.
To seek out; search for.
To drive out forcibly, especially by harassing; chase away: hunted the newcomers out of town.

So as you can pick up.. hunting means more so to chase! So TTT promised the ending of FotR.

Ok yeah your right. I was taking it as the last step of the hunt (IE the kill). Hopefully we will get to see some good fellowship action in Aragorn's trails in the cave in ROTK.

I still say I wanted to see some Human Elf Dwarf vs. Orc action in the beggining of TTT. Those fights in FOTR were more personal in FOTR. And I personally, liked them better.

The Press Release:

NEW LINE CINEMA'S THEATRICAL TRAILER FOR
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MAKES WORLDWIDE BOW FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

Los Angeles, CA, September 23, 2003 - New Line Cinema will debut the new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in theaters around the world on Friday, September 26.

In North America, the 2 min., 30 sec. trailer will play exclusively with New Line's Secondhand Lions, now in its second weekend of release. It will be in theaters throughout the weekend and will then debut online at www.lordoftherings.net on Monday, September 29.

On December 17, the Journey ends. Co-writer/director/producer Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered trilogy concludes with the worldwide release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. With intimate, emotional stories set against an epic backdrop, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tells the dramatic final story of these men, their relationships and rivalries, and how through courage, commitment, and determination even the least of us can change the world.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King stars (in alphabetical order) Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Brad Dourif, Bernard Hill, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, John Noble, Miranda Otto, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler, Karl Urban, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham, and Elijah Wood. The third film in the highly acclaimed trilogy is produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Fran Walsh and Jackson. The screenplay is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Jackson based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Without them it becomes Aragorn and co rescue Merry And pippin, avoid the forrest, never meet Gandalf. Never free the king, so get thrown out of the castle. Orcs come and everyone dies.

Boy am I glad they didn't get to fight a small band of orcs at the start.

It didn't have to be the orcs and urukai guarding merry and pippin to satisfy me. Just a small band of orcs to brutally thrash to epic music. To release some of that chasing them tension.

So there! Nya! ;P

Snippet of ROTK Trailer on E! - maegwen @ 20:03 PST
Yes, that was a collective gasp of awe that just resounded throughout the US (and anyplace else that receives the E! channel) as the brief snippet of the ROTK trailer was played. All I know is that there was a high-five spanning the globe between myself on the US east-coast and Demosthenes on the Austrailian east-coast, when our theory of Elrond bringing the reforged sword to Aragorn in a tent in Rohan encampment was proved RIGHT!
Thanks to Ringer Scorpio and his swifty video skills, we have a version for you to download! [5.5MB Quicktime File]

The whole of the snippet included the following scenes:

Aragorn says that with each moment, Frodo is moving ever closing to Mordor. Gandalf wonders "How do we know Frodo is alive?"

Aragorn replies, "What does your heart tell you?"

The next scene is of Frodo climbing to great heights in Mordor - being led by Gollum.

Gollum calls to Frodo, "Come Master."

As Gollum talks to Frodo, the ring is dangling in front of Gollum, and you can see the reflection of it in Gollum's eyes. "Come to Smeagol," he says with a chilling look on his face.

Cut to Arwen speaking to the camera, "It is time."

Brief shot of Narsil at the forge, and being plunged into the cooling bath.

Arwen off-camera, "Give him the sword of the king."

Elrond facing Aragorn within a tent, holding out Anduril, the sword reforged, to Aragorn.

Aragorn pulls it from its scabbard and holds it up in the air.

Close-up of Elrond: "Become who you were born to be," he says (SHIVERS!)

To recap what we know so far:
-- Trailer is now attached to showings of 'Underworld' at some cinemas in the UK.
-- Trailer will be attached to showings of "Secondhand Lions" in *most* US markets beginning Sept. 26 (check with your local theater).
-- AOL Members will get an early look at the trailer beginning midnight Sunday the 28th.
-- The trailer will go into general release online at the official site on Monday.
-- E! Live will also show the trailer on Monday.

There are several mirror sites running the ROTK trailer, the fastest of which I've found to be:

http://www.darkoutcast.com/ROTK_Trailer.mpeg

25mb, MPEG-1 format. Note that there is text all over the right-side of the screen (and then subtitles), which I found extremely annoying and wish I waited until Monday to see it in all its Quicktime glory.

That said, this is one great trailer. Somewhat of a departure from the final trailers for the first two films (establishing the story, gradually building up the tension and then at least a 30-second 'action' montage with Middle-Earth shattering music). While some have found this to be relatively low-key affair it doesn't fail to deliver an emotional whallop.

No word on the final music cue as yet - the first two tracks are from Howard Shore's Two Towers score (specifically 'Breath of Life' and 'Isengard Unleashed'), and the final cue could be an original composition by Mr Shore himself (there are remnants of the Gondor theme as heard on the Two Towers Extended DVD preview). Enjoy the trailer guys.

This is by far the most amazing, heart-felt, breath-taking, awe-inspiring mother of a trailer. It is PERFECT! There is no way I'm going to be able to wait until December, though, what choice do I have? I can't believe it topped 'The Two Towers' Trailer, but it does indeed soar above all others.

The visuals in this film are stunning. The glorious shots of the wring-wreaths circling down, soaring above Minus Morgal, Eomer's grief striken, tear soaked face, Gollum, EVERYTHING. This is amazing!

And the quality of the picture in this third installment is UNREAL! By far the most anticipated movie of the year for me. I cannot wait to see this film. Though I know I'll be crying throughout it and when it is over, because this time, when its over.... its' OVER.

PEACE

I have to say that I am not as impressed with this trailer as I was with the full trailers for the first two Rings movies. Granted, making a trailer for a movie as anticipated as this must be a momentous task (for I feel the same with the third Matrix trailer--it just doesn't get the job done like the trailers for matrix one and Reloaded) since everybody is expecting so much.

Yeah, we get some cool shots of the big battle scene and the lead actors looking somewhat cool, but come on, this is the FINALE to one of the greatest tales ever told!! Why couldn't this trailer build up our emotions with skillful editing and some fancy music, then right when it gets to the end, leave us with a dramatic scene, that closes with the boom of the title?

Instead, I never even felt attached to this preview. We are shown scenes that don't even seem connected and music that is either too quiet or slow paced. The ending was so rushed with the quick scenes flashing before us--where's the tension in that? I figure they should of put Aragorn's speech to his troops at the end (instead of kinda at the end). The title did give a big boom, at least they got that right.

Hopefully New Line will come out with another trailer for Return Of The King around Thanksgiving or so... and give us a hint of the real glory of this movie.

Guiboche
09-29-2003, 07:14 PM
I have to agree with you beijdak. This trailer doesn't at all live up to "The Two Towers" full trailer. I still definitely want to see this movie (and I still can't wait!), but that trailer didn't get me excited for this film at all.

beijdak
09-29-2003, 07:23 PM
Guiboche, exactly. The Two Towers full trailer was amazing. I think it still has to be my favorite trailers out there. It built up the tension so well. Leaving off from where Fellowship ended and showing us what these characters are going to have to face. The music was sychronized nicely too. And the ending built it up further before giving us that slow dramatic view of Aragorn busting through the doors of Helm's Deep--then blasting us with the title.

Return Of The King doesn't have much of that. I've watched it many times through too trying to find what they were doing!

I know, I still can't wait for the movie though!

J.Sparrow
09-29-2003, 07:30 PM
Wow.... well... I don't think the two of you deserve more trailers. This is one of, if not the greatest trailer I've ever seen... and BELIEVE ME... my expectations were HUGE (as they are for the movie). What else could you have asked for???? The shots were brilliant, the music amazing.. everything.

"Why couldn't this trailer build up our emotions with skillful editing and some fancy music"

Did you see this trailer? Build up our emotions??? I am on the verge of tears EVERYTIME I watch it... and I NEVER cry in movies. At least three people. i've talked to WHERE in tears, and they told me they felt stupid until they realized people they were with and were around were crying too! THe dialouge, the inserts the music the images..... all play on the cords of the heart. Truly touching.

"right when it gets to the end, leave us with a dramatic scene, that closes with the boom of the title?"

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO? Aragorn speaking to Gandalf, Eomer, etc basically telling them that although they may not be able to save themselves by fighting, they can help Frodo (sacrificing themselves!) the images of war, etc all leading to Sam's emotional cry "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" And then BOOM! The title! ahhhhhhhhhh.

Are you sure you didn't watch the trailer that came with TTT DVD? Because this trailer was IT. You couldn't ask for another one.

And to everyone else, no, I doubt VERY VERY much that there will be another trailer... this was it. yes the others had a teaser and a final, but as we've all heard, Mr. Jackson and his crew have been working their asses off to get this thing finished for December. The end of the sneak peek on TTT DVD was basically our teaser for this film. And now we have the uber final trailer. Couldn't ask for much more if you ask me.

And, hey, I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so if you don't like it, cool. I just don't understand how you couldn't or what else you could want. That's all.

Peace, Love and Prosperity

Great trailer... but god Apple's encoding is terrible... they really need to improve on this, very dissapointing quality.

WorkShed
09-29-2003, 09:51 PM
Yeah, I agree that the encoding was pretty sub-par.

As for the debate on whether this was a good trailer or not, I would have to agree on the fact that the full trailer for TTT was breathtaking and probably the best trailer that I have seen in recent memory. However, I still have hope that there will be another trailer. Some others disagree but even if Peter Jackson is working very hard on ROTK, he isn't necessarily the one who edits the trailers. New Line has their own publicity department so that directors don't have to waste their time editing trailers.

I'm confident that November will see a final trailer. If not, then who cares? The movie will still kick all kinds of ***.

Apple is probably not hosting the Fullscreen trailers (and this version is bad quality) is because AOL hosts these trailers and will in the near future. So you can expect a higher quality/resolution to show. If not, then wait for the TTT:EE DVD :P

Personally: Love the trailer. Not as drawing as the past two movies but whoever just wants this third movie now without watching the past to is just dumb

The extended version DVDs do not include trailers

Everyone is talking about the trailer not being as thrilling. Look at the first trailers for FOTR and TTT. They weren't that exciting!

Now, look at the FINAL trailers for FOTR and TTT. They were a hell of a lot better. I remember two years ago constantly having Gandalf scream "You... Shall not... PASS!" in my head. Nothing really enthralling about the first trailers for FOTR or TTT comes to mind.

It is the final trailers that hold everything.

This is just the beginning. In a little over a month, there will be a much better and more emotional trailer. Probably with Aragorn's speech right before the title.

Plus, did anyone else think that when Aragorn said "but we can give Frodo a chance" the composition looked kinda odd? It looked a little too bright to me. It just looked like it didn't quite fit with the mise-en-scene of the rest of the scenes in the trailer.

Plus, in the night sequence when Legolas says "he is here" the blue screen matte doesn't move at all in the background. That is definately an unfinished shot.

Hmmm... AOL/Warner just won't give it to the Apple people, saving all the goodies for themselves. It all come down to money-revenue at the end of the day...

Thanks Kn'thrak for the tip. Surely wait for another year and every Forum encoders will post this in high-res (considering it will be available on the ROTK if not TTT DVDs.)

Heh heh... time really flies... just only 5 years ago we were pretty amazed with the wonders of DLing thumbnail-sized movie trailers from the Web (well at least I was).

Now even HD is not HD enough for everyone... :P ;)

And Internet2 has not even happened (if it'll ever happen... maybe it has but I'm ignorant.)

Well I'm sure you know my point... they're Apple, they MADE QuickTime, their trailers site is supposed to be an affirmation of the quality QuickTime can do... pretty funny that all (most) the trailers are still at 480 with crummy tinny-sounding "QDesign Music 2" sound and interlacing and motion problems in the video. Pretty funny.

I think ROTK trailer failed to contain as much momentum building elements as the TTT final trailer which is in my opinion one of the best trailers I ever watched if not the best of them all. The only thing that really moved me in ROTK trailer was Aragon's speech, the rest I only like it cos it's part of TLOTR. I think they'll release a 2nd trailer and I agree with Workshed, usually the final trailers come to be much better than the first ones ~ so am pretty confident things will look and feel better :)

AGHHHHHHHHHHHH! I said it before, and I know people are entitled to their own opinions but THIS IS IT! THE trailer. No more. This was not a teaser. It is "the official theatrical trailer for Return of The King". Like it or not, don't be holding out for another one, because you ain't getting it. Unless you coun't TV Spots, but that's not what we're talking about.

Do you work at the movie company? No. You, nor anybody else, knows whether there's going to be a new one or not for sure.

omg..lol! I watched the trailer...ummm IMHO it's not as good because like some or most say there is less momentum built in this trailer...and music wasn't fantastic although still good.
But like all fans I still anticipate the movie and hope it will be good.
But as for trailers, I'm surprised no one said anyting about the fellowship trailer. IMHO, the fellowship trailer is the best among the three...lol
FOTR, TTT and then ROTK...in terms of momentum and the way it makes u anticipate the movie further...
Don't know...but I really loved the FOTR trailer. The way they were all in the council and everyone would support frodo to mount doom and stuff...and especially the finale where gandalf hit the staff onto the ground saying "you shall not pass"...
IMO the FOTR trailer was totally awesome...more so than TTT...and obviously ROTK...in my opinion of course. lol
so no flames pls :)

Anyways hope for a full screen trailer and also another trailer if possible ;)

Can't wait...

Have you even paid attention over the past two years?

FOTR Trailer was released. It gave a lot of images, but not a lot of true emotional substance.

FOTR Full Trailer was released. It gave a lot more substance and told much more of the story. There was a lot of emotion with the Caves sequences with the orcs and of course, we have not easily forgotten the end (YOU SHALL NOT... PASS!)

Cut to a year later:
TTT Trailer was released. It gave a lot of images, told us that Gandolf was indeed still alive, but not a lot of true emotional substance.

TTT Full Trailer was released. It gave a lot more substance and gave far more images of the evacuation and the battle at Helm's Deep. The trailer definately uped the emotions with the rendition of the "Requim for a Dream" theme.

Cut to now:
ROTK Trailer is released. It gives a lot of image, tells us that all the lose ends will be tied together with a huge friggin war, but not a lot of true emotional substance.

Based off of the past few years, what is likely to happen next?

Yes, there is only about two and a half months until ROTK, but that is still plenty of time to keep the publicity train moving. Especially for the numbers that will be expected to turn out to ROTK. If you saw one, you likely went to two, if you've seen two you will go to three. This trilogy has picked up more followers along the way. Who will pass up seeing the greatest epic trilogy since the original Star Wars in the theatre? Not I. I am positive that a lot of people are with me on this one.

So, will New Line forgo creating another trailer for a great opportunity with Thanksgiving weekend, the first movie theatre weekend of the holidays? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

New Line Cinema knows what it is doing. It isn't hard for a marketing company to edit a trailer (hell, they do enough of them or there wouldn't be this website) and since LOTR is their cash cow, I think they will work on another one.

They have to keep the publicity train going.

If 20th Century Fox will do 3 teasers for Attack of the Clones within a one month span of time, I think that New Line can make two trailers within a couple of months.

According to theonering.net, this will be the only official trailer for the film.

Further, Peter Jackson doesn't like the "limitations" of trailers and considers the ROTK trailer just "a formality."

Dammit, man, where are the teasers? Only a trailer! Damn. Wait, a tick, maybe the ROTK preview on TTT is the teaser?

Thank You!

Yes if you look at the past you'll see the format is teaser/trailer, but this year is different. With all the special effects etc. etc. in ROTK, and the shortened deadline for Academy Voters, PJ and the team have been killing themselves trying to get this thing finished. There was no teaser at the end of The Two Towers such as there was on Fellowship. Yet the 10 min ROTK special on TTT DVD was teaser-esque. This IS the last trailer. The official site says so. The filmmakers have said so. Just bc the other two films had two doesn't mean this one HAS to.

Possibly..... although the trailers are featured on the theatrical DVD releases, they could very well put this in as a hidden cookie, like they put in the TTT teaser on FOTR:EE. We'll see!

I saw an almost completely different preview of ROTK. Perhaps it was a teaser. Both versions had Gandalf talking about the board being set and the pieces moving, and both had Merry telling Pippin they'll see the Shire again. The final shot is stunning, with Gandalf on Shadowfax at the top of a tower at Minas Tirith about to face one of the Ring Wraiths on those flying creatures. I can't recall where I saw it though. Anyone else see it?

A-ha, thank you.

That is why I am a "Junior Member" and you are the "Trailer Master"...

Oops, wait a tick. I just checked on this site and all I can find is the full trailer. Is there another place I should look around here?
