The Miss Hong Kong pageant is kind of like those Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss whatever pageants in the US. It's just another excuse for a variety show for the free-to-air TV station in Hong Kong.

Whoever got the title does not really have much to do with how pretty/wise/bitchy she is, just so that the judges of that year think she deserved it.

Those who got into the pageant sometimes do get a career start in the showbiz playing TV soaps then movies. Some of the few famous examples are:

Maggie Cheung, (yes, the Maggie Cheung in Hero, In The Mood For Love and Irma Vep).

Cherie Chung (who was an active movie star in Hong Kong during the 80s, did a few flicks with Leslie Cheung and Chow Yun-Fat. Unfortunately she's lesser known to Western audiences cos she mostly did romantic comedies.)

Anita Yuen (who was an active movie star in Hong Kong during the 90s, also did a few flicks with Leslie Cheung (eg "She's Man. He's A Woman."). She's in "From Beijing With Love" with Stephen 'Sholin Soccer' Chow. Also lesser known in the West cos she didn't do too many action flicks.)

And you can count on editman for the facts... I'm more authetic in this area than IMDB. :rolleyes:
