Loch 06-12-2002, 08:32 PM Mischa is right, there are so many incredible releases from Criterion---some of my favourite being Brazil, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Traffic, and 8 1/2 just to name a few. Just because a movie was made 40 years ago doesn't make it bad.... :\ Movie Wizard 06-12-2002, 08:40 PM "Seven Samuri" is one of the best. Kn'thrak 06-12-2002, 11:28 PM oh yeah.. your rite again Wizard :D .. Samuri trilogy is also cool. Such old movies can become DVDs. Outstanding eh? salsa shark 06-13-2002, 01:35 AM
quote:
Originally posted by Movie Wizard: This is a Dream in my life. It would only cost a few thousand dollars to pick all of those up. :( I'm on my way right now. I have one: Chasing Amy. I own it. It's loaded with extras. I enjoyed it. But it is far from a classic. The Rock on the other hand is a little more acceptable. Kick *** action. I think it is one of the best action films ever made. hicks 06-15-2002, 05:27 PM I have Armageddon. editman 06-16-2002, 02:58 AM
quote:
Originally posted by salsa shark: I would love to have the entire collection. Though all of them are great landmark movies no doubt, some of them are not everyone's cup of tea and are really, REALLY difficult to watch, making you wonder whether it's worth to buy them at all. Take an example: no offence but those Carl Dreyer movies can really bore your pant off! (Trust me, I know.) Then again, you can always get them all in one go if you have a few grants to spare... Movie Wizard 06-16-2002, 05:24 AM Hey and maby if you go the the 'COMPANY' they might give you a discout for buying everything at once, thats what iam gona do. Loch 06-16-2002, 12:45 PM Criterion has to release more mainstream movies so they can survive (i.e. The Rock, Armageddon). Tony 06-16-2002, 12:50 PM The only ones that interest me are : Chasing Amy, The Rock and Traffic editman 06-16-2002, 06:34 PM
quote:
Originally posted by Loch: Criterion has to release more mainstream movies so they can survive (i.e. The Rock, Armageddon).

I reckon too. Though it's a damn shame because if it's not for Criterion, we'll never have the Kurosawa movies and other great classics on R1 DVDs, you know those films only cinephiles or people who did film classes know about. Hey, is there any Criterion laserdisc you'd want to have it on DVD too? I'd like to see a Criterion DVD treatment of The Graduate, Ghostbusters, Citizen Kane and Olympia (I and II). Although the first 3 are already on DVDs, some of the great stuff on the Criterion LDs are missing: eg delete scene and *teaser* of Ghostbusters, screen tests and photos of the Graduate, Orson Welles' shorts (though you can get that from another DVD). I think Olympia is coming out on Criterion DVD, though not sure when. Equinox 06-16-2002, 07:01 PM Well, from my "Top 20 ever" list there's only "The 400 Blows", which I have already on Fox/Lorber DVD (it costs 10 times less than Criterion's on eBay). There are many movies for 1 watching ONLY ("And the Ship Sails On" is a sample of extremelly boring film, "Salo" is pretty sick movie), and I'm personally don't see any sense to own them on DVD. I must agree that a lot of these movies I never saw, but I'm not living last day, right? :) hicks 06-17-2002, 09:14 AM Oh.. I wouldn't mind getting The Rock. radstar 06-17-2002, 03:16 PM
quote:
Originally posted by hicks: Oh.. Too bad they're not re-releasing it. editman 06-19-2002, 08:07 PM
quote:
Originally posted by Loch: Criterion released an amazing version of David Fincher's 'The Game' on laserdisc, with enough features to compete against Fight Club's set. And if you think about it for a sec it is quite possible, since Criterion has been releasing SEs of movies owned by Universal/USA films (eg Traffic, In the mood for love, Last Temptation of Christ, Written on the Wind, Spartacus etc) And Universal now holds the rights of "The Game"... It's a shame most of the titles Criterion has released this year aren't as appealing to the general public as last year(s). Loch 06-20-2002, 12:16 PM I'm familiar with the rumors, in fact, I got this email from Jon Mills the other day: "As far as I know there are no plans for Criterion to release a new version of The Game on DVD. However, this is Criterion's story and if they don't hold the rights to the film (which is the current excuse, since Universal bought PolyGram a while back) then they wouldn't want people like us spreading rumors about it. Perhaps Universal would be reluctant to sell the rights to Criterion if they new there was a high demand for a re-release. But that doesn't mean that Criterion hasn't already started work or at least put some plans up on the drawing board. I have yet to hear back from my original source for that story, therefore I cannot say one way or the other what's happening behind the scenes at Criterion (or Universal for that matter)." chopper91 07-10-2002, 10:56 AM I bought Rushmore on Criterion and now it is my favorite DVD, hands down. If I had more money I would buy more...Im saving up for the Royal Tennenbaums. chris3177 07-16-2002, 01:41 AM Some of Criterions choices of films are questionable: Armageddon, anyone? Overall they do an excellent job with DVDs. I own The Third Man, Brazil, Time Bandits, Armageddon (I know, I know!), Robocop, Royal Tenenbaums, Chasing Amy, and Silence of the Lambs. All very impressive, especially the uncut Robocop:) |
