i saw dogville yesterday.
very strange movie, but definetly not to be missed for people interested in something different.
grace (nicole kidman) comes to the (very small) town named dogville under unclear circumstances (explained later in the movie). the people living there decide that she can stay, if she helps them out with their work and in their homes. everything works great for a while, but later the people of dogville want more and more and they begin to abuse her in (sometimes) bizarre ways.
first i thought that the fact that lars von trier didn't use real sets and almost no props would result in something boring, but after a while the movie gets really interesting and somehow i didn't miss the buildings or props, although it looks unintentionally funny to see people opening non existent doors. especially during one scene the fact that there are no walls is pretty important. when grace gets raped in her house, there's one shot where you can see the whole town with everyone around, and in the background the rape is happening. this scene is pretty disturbing, because basically everyone is in one big room without walls, while a woman gets raped nearby, with people walking by her house.
the movie ends with a very bizarre and disturbing but also funny (in some sick way) twist, that turns the movie in a totally different direction.
because of the fantastic performances by the whole cast, the movie doesn't feel like 3 hours, although it's pretty long. i read that for us distribution 45 minutes had to be cut out, because the distributor felt that the movie is too long to be released. i can't see how you can cut out almost a third of any movie without destroying it.
