Academy is scurrred

So the Academy Awards are using a tape delay so they can censor any outbursts. Do you think this is necessary? Or are they overreacting?

My favorite part of the Award shows are the surprises that happen. I'm hoping for some political outbursts and maybe attempts at nudity! What are you guys looking forward to?

It airs on ABC, not Playboy!! :)

I don't know how much they can censor. But don't forget there are reporters and visitors there that could spread out any word said.

In the light of this, the Academy may not have the ability to censor everything it finds offensive, but censor things people might find offensive - like an attempt of nudity.

Censoring a political speech will get the Academy in a bad position. Human rights, freedom of speech, blah, blah, blah...

Do you think a lot of people will try to make political statements in their speeches?

Sean Penn probably will see his win (if he does, in fact, win) as vindication for his father's blacklisting. Susan Sarandon regrets not saying more last year, so Tim Robbins might right that wrong.

Honestly, I hope they don't make stupid political speeches. Michael Moore got more press last year then the winners of Chicago. I'd feel terrible for PJ if his big win is overshadowed by some stupid guy who thinks that being an actor who watches CNN makes their opinion worthy. It's a night about movies...I hope it stays that way.

I'd hardly think that a streaker or overexcited Janet Jackson would qualify as Playboy material. Hell here in Britain we've had a full frontal ugly blocke run accross the screen during the early morning weather forcast, you know, the time before the kids have left for school, we never suddenly started showing everything 5 minutes later, because then calling it 'live' is false advertising. What they should do is what they do with PPV's like wrestling. Show it live, and then have another showing a few hours later where they can censor anything offensive, though from what I here on these forums, there's quite a few Americans who would watch the live show anyway just to have something to complain about, but I say stuff them, they should get a life and not deprive the rest of you of live broadcasts.

Luckily, we probably wont have any delay, except for the second or so it takes the boradcast to reach these shores.

but movies/films is a form of art that reflects the signs of the times and its just natural that the people involved in this art form show us what is goin on in our world.....

u can't possibly simply say that films/ movies are just mere entertainment... they are actually remembered later on, on era they reflected or mirrored....

I agree whole-heartedly.

Last year, Michael Moore had more of a jumping off point to his rant than any potential winner really does this year. I don't really mind that Moore made the connection that he made last year and spoke about political things, I'm just bummed that speech that took a lot of the spotlight off the other winners.

But I think this year people are looking for Sean Penn to do something similar from the podium. Mystic River was a complex movie that mixes art and real world goings on, and Penn could use it as a jumping point to say "we need to crack down on pedophiles or vigilanties" or "we need a develop a country were people can actually have faith in their law enforcement." Sean Penn (or Tim Robbins) can't really say with integrity that his role or this movie had anything to do with war in the Middle East. If a winner wins for their role in a movie, tell us how that movie reflected real life experiences for you (like Moore did last year). I pray that winners don't simply forget about their movie and role when they get to the podium and instead talk about completely non-related topics.

Would you rather see a political speech? Or something crazy like Adrien Brody kissing Halle Berry?

Not that the Brody/Berry kiss did anything for me, but I'd prefer something like that. At least that captured the excitement of the moment. Political speeches don't capture the excitement of of what is supposed to be the culmination of a great effort. Instead of an award being the REWARD for work well done, the award becomes a MEANSto voice your opinion to a large audience.

That's my opinion.

ABC said it will air this year's Academy Awards on a five-second delay -- a first for the Oscars -- to allow network censors to edit out any spontaneous outbursts of profanity or nudity that might occur during the live event.

The network is taking the precaution following the breast-baring performance of Janet Jackson (news) during the CBS telecast of her Super Bowl halftime duet with pop idol Justin Timberlake (news).

Oscars telecast producer Joe Roth has said the tape delay will not be used to censor political statements that Oscar winners or presenters may make during the broadcast.

5 seconds it says!!

Just thought I'd mention that you likely won't see Sean Penn there... he never attends awards ceremonies.

I thought Tim Robbins's speech was awesome! Perfect blend of movies and politics.

Penn's little dig was cute.

hang on didnt tim robbins diss the australian film industry? something about not being paid overtime.. or the rates were crap?... (from what i can remember he was quickly rebuked)

very few australians get paid overtime, not because we dont have the right.. we dont ask for it, i guess its part of the work ethic, (in most cases) if you dont get a job done in the allocated time, its up to you to finish it... i.e. if robbins piss farted around on the set and took 20 takes for a single scene and he has to work longer TOUGH LUCK! he should have put in a little more and done the scene in 5 takes!

but why am i ranting, i dont even know exactly what he said..
