Night, Dawn, Day, Land, Return of the Living Dead, Zombie 1, 2, 3, 4... huh

Since I consider myself a zombie-movies fan, I decided to find and watch all the zombie movies that a real fan of the genre should see. Finding some of these movies (other then those by Romero) is not an easy job, and of the reasons why is because they all have similar titles, especially the italian ones. I found this article on amazon.com that helps clear some of the confusion - so here it is for those that are interested in the subject. I added the IMDb links to the titles myself.
I know a lot of you, like I was, are confused about what zombie movie is a sequel to which. When I first started getting into zombie movies, I was mind boggled with how many sequels and how confusing it can be with all their alternate titles. With this guide, I hope to clear up some of your confusion.

It all started back in 1968 with George Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition)'. George Romero would later go on in 1977 and direct a sequel to Night of the Living Dead entitled 'Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)'. Dawn of the Dead would be retitled Zombi for for Italian release, Zombie for Holland release, as well as Zombie: Dawn of the Dead and Zombies in other various places in Europe and Asia. Dawn of the Dead was such a success over in Europe, that Italian filmmaker Lucio Fulci decided to make an unoffical sequel in 1979 entitled 'Zombi 2 (25th Anniversary Special Edition 2-Disc Set)'. To make matters a little confusing, Zombi 2 would be retitled 'Zombie' for U.S. release. It would also be released in Britain as Zombie Flesh Eaters. Later in 1985, George Romero would make his own offical sequel and third in his trilogy entitled 'Day of the Dead (Divimax Special Edition)', which would be released as Zombie 2 in Holland. Italian Director Lucio Fulci would also decide to make another sequel into the Italian Zombie series, so in 1988 he made 'Zombi 3'. Zombi 3 would not be theatrically released in the U.S., but it did finally arrive on DVD under its original Italian title. It would be released in Britian as Zombie Flesh Eaters 2. This Zombi 3, and offical entry in the series, is not to be confused with the Italian film Le Notti del Terrore made back in 1980 by director Andrea Bianchi since that film was retitled Zombie 3: Nights of Terror in Holland. Le Notti del Terrore would later be retitled Burial Ground for U.S. theatrical release and then 'Burial Ground - Night of Terror' for DVD release. One year after the release of Lucio Fulci's Zombi 3, Director Claudio Fragasso would make a film entitled Oltre la Morte, which would be later retitled Zombi 4 for Italian video release, Zombie Flesh Eaters 3 for British release, and After Death for U.S. theatrical release. It would later be released as 'Zombie 4 - After Death' for American DVD release, even though the actual film itself only portrays the title After Death. For some reason the U.S. DVD release of an Italian film entitled Uccelli Assassini (Originally released in the U.S. as Killing Birds) got released as 'Zombie 5 - Killing Birds'. This my friend, is no Zombie movie and doesn't belong in the Italian Zombie series. Are we all squared away! I at least hope this cleared up some of your confusion.

Night of the Living Dead also didn't just inspire a bunch of sequels, both in America and Italy, it also inpired a bunch of other films, such as the semi sequel spoof 'The Return of the Living Dead'. Return of the Living Dead was originally written as a serious sequel by Night co-scriptor John Russo but it was later made in 1985 to be a more of a comical spoof so it is not considered to be a true sequel. Return of the Living Dead sprouted its own series and produced the confusingly titled sequels 'Return of the Living Dead 2', 'Return of the Living Dead 3', 'Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis', and 'Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave From the Grave (Parts 4&5 are in post-production). 'Night of the Living Dead' was even remade in 1990 by SFX god Tom Savini (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100258/). It wasn't to shabby. 'Dawn of the Dead (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)' was also remade in 2004 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363547/). It's quite different from the original and doesn't come near the impact, but it is still entertaining in its own right. Currently Taurus Entertainment is making a "sequel" to George Romero's Day of the Dead titled Day of the Dead: Contagion, which just furthers the confusion of the zombie series. Romero himself is making a fourth and final entry into his series entitled Land of the Dead. Both Day of the Dead: Contagion and Land of the Dead are due to be released in late 2005.

This is in no way a COMPLETE bio of all the alternate titles zombie films have been listed under for every country. It would take up several pages to list them all, but this page goes over the major points. I still hope this page came in useful for people trying to somewhat get all the zombie films out there straight.

UPDATE: 05/22/05 - Taurus Entertainment has just announced that along with their sequel Day of the Dead: Contagion, they will also be making a remake of Romero's film Day of the Dead. It will not be a sequel to the Dawn of the Dead Remake.

i only can say: don't watch the lucio fulci zombie films!!!! i've watched some of them and they are just plain and simple boring. lucio fulcio has no skill as a director and his films don't come even close to romero's zombie films.
of course there are some really cool zombie films besides romero's films such as dellamorte dellamore, braindead, shaun of the dead and zack snyders remake of dawn of the dead. surely there are more films that have zombies in them but trust you don't wanna watch the lucio fulcio films

I'm about to watch Zombi 2 (Zombie Flesh Eaters) in 15 mins... I'll see it and tell you what I think of it... from what I've read about Fulci's horrors (on IMDb) - the man is a genius.

OK, just finished watching Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters (Zombi 2). It certainly wasn't Romero - far from that, but I liked it - although I can understand why some people may find it boring or others may laugh at the things that are happening in this kind of movies.
Still, I love the atmosphere that these italian horrors from the 70's and 80's have and I plan to watch Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 (Zombi 3) next... parts of that film were shot by Fulci and other parts are by another italian director, since Fulci left the movie (don't know why).

Well, Zombi 3 is a totally different movie - it's so stupid that it's actually very funny at times. You've got zombie birds, talking zombies, the head in the fridge scene was hilarious, a not-completely-born baby zombie (or something like that), scientists that search for the cure like this: "let's see if we can put these two molecules together... It might work" - and at the end there is a zombie DJ... what else can a zombie fan wish for? :big grin:
I know Trailergod would love this movie...
