Director Baz Luhrmann is drafting his Romeo & Juliet star Leonardo DiCaprio to topline his Alexander the Great epic, which Dino De Laurentiis is producing and Universal and Fox are co-financing, says Variety. De Laurentiis confirmed to the trade that negotiations are under way with DiCaprio, a development that has ramifications for several projects competing to be first to the starting line.

Intermedia executives claim they are moving forward with Oliver Stone as director of a film that has Colin Farrell ready and able to portray the charismatic conqueror in a movie they say will also go into production early next year. Variety says that because each of the films could cost $140 million, it's likely that the film that begins shooting first will be the only one that gets made.

Meanwhile, if DiCaprio decides to head into Alexander territory, it means that his team-up with director Martin Scorsese on The Aviator would have to take a backseat clearing the way for a competing Howard Hughes project in the works at Castle Rock, with Jim Carrey starring and Chris Nolan directing..

wow.... and Chrid Nolan is directing Jim Carrey ....
