From Looney Tunes: Back in Action -
Bugs Bunny: So this is Area 51?
    Mother: No.
Bugs Bunny: The secret government base?
    Mother: No.
Bugs Bunny: Where they keep all the aliens?
Mother: No. Area 51 is a paranoid fantasy we concocted to hide the true nature of this facility.
    DJ Drake: Which is?
    Mother: Area 52.

well the explanation they use most often is that they're often military planes and that explains it for me, even if you look at something like the B-2 or the F117 those are incredibly irregularly shaped planes. Department of Defense prototypes aren't going to be flying in broad daylight either so if I saw the B-2 in 1970 (when it was being tested) I'd assume it was a UFO too (maybe) People say they hover and things like that but come on, the Joint Strike Fighter hovers as well, every helicopter hovers, there are helicopters with noise cancelation that makes them very quiet. Beams of light? Pretty much every helicopter has a light beam.

Now sure one can't explain these "abductions" but I naturally mistrust people with such stories.

I think all this came about because people in these small towns had nothing better to do than go spy on the many military and private developer bases in these middle of nowhere places. It is a fact that there are absolutely enormous factories in strange places and they are "secret" but I wouldn't go advertising that I manufacture nuclear warheads in my facility either. The US has some serious aerospace technology that simply can't be made public because we'd lose our military edge over others.

The Predator drone was tested years ago, that'd be scary as hell to see in the middle of the desert at night.
