Dakota Fanning semi-naked and raped: has Hollywood gone too far?
In the upcoming movie Hounddog,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415856
Dakota Fanning plays a precocious 12 year old girl who is molested and raped and to find solace, she listens to Elvis Presley music.
Fanning character spents most of the movie topless and in panties; there is also a molestation scene and a rape scene.
Doesn't this constitute Child Pornography?
Has Hollywood gone too far?
Has Dakota Fanning's parents lost their mind; they have to approve every role she takes!!
Fanning has recently said in an interview that she wants to be next Meryl Streep and she wants to take more seriously dramatic roles but I don't think this is the way to go!!

For God's sake, Dakota, worry about an Oscar when you're an adult. Until then, you're a child. Have fun on kids films, not ones about child molestation. I'm not too pleased with her parents, either.
Although, at least in this country, if things get a bit too out of hand, our censors will intervene.
I'm pretty sure that if you have to show something like this, then you're not doing a good enough job of showing the horror.

The movie hasn't come out yet. I'll personally wait until I see it and comment on it. Until then everything is merely buzz.
Just one thing: It's her decision to choose whatever roles to play while she's still a bankable actor. Better that than not having a choice but appearing in cameo roles in B-comedies like Carmen Electra or Billy Zane.

I liked her in Man on Fire...
I'll wait for a trailer, and then I'll wait for the movie. Editman is correct.
(btw - Hard Candy, anyone? I know the actress there is 17 but she plays a 14 year old very convincingly by the trailer )

I still want to see Hard Candy;
it's not out on DVD until 9/19 and the movie only played for 1 week at a repertory theater in town!!

It disturbs me that people are up in arms about a project that is not finished, hasn't been viewed, and people know very little about.
In fact... for a post that's trying to look out for a victim, the title of the thread is worded to add shock value and suggests a ploy for attention.
I'm not meaning to be harsh here, but I'm sick and tired of people flying up in arms over actors ACTING. The argument that she is 12 years-old no longer holds water. With all the rules in place nowadays (limited working hours per day. teacher/tudor on the premises. Adult present at all times) child actors are as protected as they can be in this type of business.
Instead of going nuts about child molestation in a film, they should turn there attention to the thousands of cases of child molestation happening daily in the world arround them.
End rant.

The original story comes from The New York Daily News.
All shook up over Dakota's 'Hounddog'
Twelve-year-old Dakota Fanning deals with rape and child abuse in 'Hounddog.'
Cute-as-a-button child star Dakota Fanning, who turned 12 in February, is venturing into sexually disturbing territory in a movie being filmed in North Carolina.
The screenplay for "Hounddog" - a dark story of abuse, violence and Elvis Presley adulation in the rural South, written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier - calls for Fanning's character to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in "underpants" in several other horrifying moments.
Fanning's mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, see the movie as a possible Oscar vehicle for the pint-size star. But despite Fanning's status as a bankable actress - whose movies, including last year's "War of the Worlds," have earned more than half a billion dollars since 2001 - the alarming material seems to have scared off potential investors from the under-$5 million indie project.
"The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals," a source close to the situation told me. "In this movie, both things happen."
Fanning's carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed. But then the production - which also stars Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie - was shut down for lack of funds. Penn, who's also an executive producer, gave a pep talk to the dispirited cast in the days leading up to the shutdown. The desperate producer, Jen Gatien, daughter of former club czar Peter Gatien, sent out an SOS to New York entertainment entrepreneur Lawrence Robins. Robins located emergency investors, filming resumed, and the movie is scheduled to wrap tomorrow.
"The subject matter is very tough," Robins told me, "but I was attracted to it because in the end it's a story about human understanding, about a little girl who's dealt a very bad deck of cards, but finds solace in the music of Elvis and survives."
The script requires the preteen actress to confront tougher challenges than Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster did when, at Fanning's age, they played child prostitutes.
"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress," Fanning's longtime agent, Osbrink, told me. "And I've never been so proud of her in my life. I've seen the dailies, and in every scene she gets better and better."

I don't know what to think about that. First I'm shock. I hope the rape scene will not show too much thing (in IMDB trivia the mother said that the scene was "tastefully done"!). I don't want this to look like Irreversible. I don't know what to say, why they can't just make it suggest the rape, or play with the camera angle, so she no needs to be naked (she's just a kid) but we know that she's rape? I will wait for more informations.
For the Oscar thing, I think it a lot of pressure for a little girl, I hope this is not the mother who put put this in her head, like Natalie Wood. How many child actor had became depressed because of family trouble?
Hard Candy? By the trailers, it don't look there will be nude scenes, it seems to be the story of a girl takes revenge of a pedophile. I don't know if I will see it because I don't think the movie will come out here in Quebec.*´¨)

Sure the scene isn't for real and all that but the question is, do I as a viewer need to SEE her being "raped" however graphic it may be? Why can't directors actually get creative and tell the story in another way?
To give an example, in Pulp Fiction, when Zed is closing the door you don't know what's going on, but you can imagine it, and while you do actually see it, is it really necessary? IMHO a closed door with sound is to me more revealing than a hardcore porn scene.
I think it's too much and I won't care for seeing this movie if it is indeed as described. I think it's nothing more than a controversy started to create buzz and I think it's a step down for our movies.
