Day 6 - Dirty Deeds, City of Ghosts, Try Seventeen, Bend it Like Beckham

    Day Six

    Dirty Deeds, David Caesar

Plot Outline: Set in 1960's Sydney, this is the story of an Australian gangster whose booming business, buoyed by the influx of U.S. soldiers in town for R&R during their tours in Vietnam, attracts the attention of first the Chicago mafia, and then their East Coast competitors.

    JP: ***1/2 of 5
    Blankboy: ***1/2 of 5

Notes: Funny and entertaining with an all around great cast. A fun, flashy directing style mixed with a good soundtrack. Doesn't take itself too seriously, especially for a "mob" movie. Has a bit of a slow middle which could've used a little trimming.

    [no director or cast present]

    City of Ghosts, Matt Dillon

Plot Summary: A con man (Dillon) travels to Cambodia (also on the run from law enforcement in the U.S.) to collect his share in an insurance scam, but discovers more than he bargained for...

    JP: **1/2 of 5
    Blankboy: *** of 5

Notes: Interesting story, though slow at times. Visually looks great with some interesting casting (with the exception of Stellan Skarsgard who we both disliked) - notably Gerard Depardieu and the man who played the rikshaw driver.

Matt Dillon, co-writer Barry Gifford and Stellan Skarsgard

    Try Seventeen, Jeffrey Porter

Plot Outline: The story of a young man who enters college only to discover that he can learn more about life and love from his neighbors in the apartment building where he lives.

    JP: ***1/2 of 5
    Blankboy: **1/2 of 5

Notes: Predictable story with enough twists and laughs to make it interesting. Likable cast. Movie loses points for it's horrible ending.

Bend it Like Beckham, Gurinder Chadha

Plot Outline: A comedy about bending the rules to reach your goal, Bend It Like Beckham explores the world of women's football, from kick-abouts in the park to freekicks in the Final. Set in Hounslow, West London and Hamburg, the film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. Heart-stopping talent doesn't seem to be enough when your parents want you to hang up your football boots, find a nice boyfriend and learn to cook the perfect chapatti.

    JP: ***1/2 of 5
    Blankboy: **** of 5

Notes: A huge surprise! Very funny and enlightening with great performances. Wasn't your typical "underdog team beats the odds" sports movie. A HUGE crowd pleaser. J.P. felt it had a few clichés.
