A fire at Universal Studios in Los Angeles has destroyed a set from Back to the Future, the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels, the Associated Press reported.

Los Angeles County fire Captain Frank Reynoso told reporters that the blaze broke out just before dawn on June 1 on a backlot stage at the 400-acre property, the AP reported. The fire has been contained, though it continued to burn as of Sunday morning. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Officials said that the iconic courthouse square from Back to the Future has been destroyed, and the famous clocktower that enabled star Michael J. Fox's character to time travel has been damaged.

NBC Universal president and chief operating officer Ron Meyer said that 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the video vault, but that there are duplicates in a different location.

Meyer also told KABC-TV in Los Angeles that the fire damaged two of the eight location sets used by the CBS' supernatural series Ghost Whisperer, which shoots on the lot.

As for the famed King Kong animatronic attraction that is part of the Universal Studios theme park tour, Meyer told KABC that the attraction was "totally destroyed."

Meyer discounted rumors that a bomb threat had been phoned into the studio, telling KABC that neither studio nor public officials were aware of any such threat.

Meyer said that the studio tour would open at noon on Sunday and that the studio itself would be back to business as usual on Monday
