Thumbs up Review - Die Another Day

Is "Die Another Day" dead on arrival?

Most certianly not. While not perfect, the new installment of Bond will, in my opinion revitalize the series. The new Bond is far superior to its two predecessors, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough.

First up, the players. Broson continues as Bond, with this part being much darker than he's usually played. However, his Bond ascends to new levels of shallowness with his verbal interplays with Jinx, played by Halle Berry. What were the writers thinking?!? The lines given to Jinx make Bond seem likes he's stuck in a 1960 version of Bond. Today's audiences can handle more complex characters (remember Trevelyan from Goldeneye). Miranda Frost, played by Rosamund Pike, was a classy Bond girl. What I liked with regards to Frost and Jinx were that for most of the movie it was difficult to tell which was the "Bad" Bond Girl. The villians were slightly off. I had trouble believing Bond suddenly realizing something was "strange" about Gustav Graves.
I would have liked to see more of Zao, played by Rick Yune, previously of The Fast and The Furious, as he has a commanding screen presence. To bad he was relagated to the role of evil-sidekick. Judi Dench lends her services as the cold M, but there was nothing new there. The character of Q returns in the guise of John Cleese. Cleese shines in his new role, promoted from the rank of R in a previous movie. I will miss Desmond Llewelyn, but John Cleese is a good successor. He has a darker wit than Llewelyn which let itself to the undertone of the movie.

Overall, the plot is almost on par with Goldeneye, complete with betrayal, big guns, fast cars, can cool chase scenes. Without reveling too much, I felt that the first "chase scene" was the best, and a "chase scene" near the end could have been exectued better. There are surprises in the movie (particularly at the very end )

The title track done by Madonna I think was a good turn. Before people start getting upset at me, my thoughts are that it was a good experiment. Most of the Bond songs have been similar to the Goldeneye theme style. I would have preferred though keeping the style of never having Bond appear in the song-montage.

The Bond series is in need of a recharge after the dismal last two movies. Die Another Day is a step in the right direction.

    3.5 out of 5 stars
