Lots of chaos in the production of the film, including the replacement of the director

Two weeks after the departure of Edgar Wright from the superhero movie Ant-Man, Marvel has finally settled on a new director for the project. The studio announced on its website Saturday that it has enlisted Peyton Reed to helm the project, with a script written in part by Anchorman director Adam McKay.

Reed's previous directing credits include Yes Man, The Break-Up and Bring It On, as well as the Upright Citizens Brigade TV series and the David Cross and Bob Odenkirk cult sketch comedy Mr. Show. He had previously developed the Marvel peroperty Fantastic Four before the film was taken over by Tim Story, according to Variety.

Adam McKay confirmed that he had been in talks for the Ant-Man directing job at the end of May, but ultimately turned it down to focus on other commitments. Instead, he'll help rewrite the script.

The production appeared to be in turmoil on May 23rd, when Wright left Ant-Man, citing differences with Marvel. The director, known for the distinctive style he developed in films including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, had co-written the movie's script with Joe Cornish. Despite the shake-ups, Marvel is still planning on its original July 2015 release date.

The film stars Paul Rudd as the titular superhero, who has the ability to shrink in size while increasing in strength. Michael Douglas will join him as scientist Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, and Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, Michael Peņa and Corey Stoll are also reportedly attached to the film.

My interest in this movie has dropped since Edger Wright left. Maybe my interest will come back after I see some footage.

Looks like it is still shooting for a July 2015 date, but this news puts it in jeopardy, especially considering Wright was a driving creative force.

    Update From Blastr

Unsurprisingly, since Scott Lang is the Ant-Man we're dealing with, Paul Rudd's version of the character will be a thief who's down on his luck. That's when he sneaks into the apartment of Hank Pym only to discover (and subsequently steal) the Ant-Man suit.

Ant Man will be going toe to toe with Darren Cross. In the comics Cross owns Cross Technological Enterprises, a company as big as Stark Industries and Oscorp. Lang will also face off against Cross's cousin, a villain named Crossfire who will have a suit very similar to Ant-Man's but with more of a mililtary feel.

And speaking of the Ant-Man suit, apparently it's much more elaborate than what we've seen. It'll feature a mask that can open and close, much like Iron Man's, but it will also have red lights, TRON-esque, much like Black Widow's new suit.

Last, but certainly not least, Lang's main allies will, in fact, be ants. Yes, like the actual insects. Ant-Man will be able to communicate with them through his helmet. While that does happens in the comics, we're a little surprised that element will actually make it into the film.

Ant-man filming underway, with new director Payton Reed

Now that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” surprised Hollywood when it opened to more than $94 million at the domestic box office and gave Marvel Studios the start of a new franchise, it’s Peyton Reed’s turn to do the same with next summer’s “Ant-Man,” which kicks off principal photography next week in Atlanta.

The film, which kicks off Phase 3 of Marvel’s cinematic universe (the second wraps up with “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” in May), will introduce Paul Rudd as a man who can changes sizes and communicate with insects when wearing a suit created by his mentor Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), a founding member of the Avengers in the comicbooks.

Preliminary footage has already been shot — a harrowing action sequence for the film, which co-stars Corey Stoll and Evangeline Lilly (as the Wasp, another key Avenger), was shown at Comic-Con with Lang escaping on the back of a flying ant.

Ever since Reed replaced Edgar Wright as “Ant-Man’s” director in July, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has worked overtime to calm the company’s core fanbase that all is still well with the film.

There was reason to worry. Wright had been developing to direct “Ant-Man” for the past decade and his departure signaled issues with the project. Reed also didn’t seem like a Marvel man, having directed “Bring It On” and “Yes Man.” Once cast members like Patrick Wilson started leaving the project due to scheduling issues, and Matt Gerald and Kevin Weisman were eliminated altogether, more red flags were raised.

But Marvel is sticking with its July 17, 2015 release date under Reed’s helm. Feige has amped up Reed’s nerd credentials, disclosing that he nearly directed “Guardians of the Galaxy,” had been attached to helm Fox’s “Fantastic Four” a decade ago, and “is someone that I’ve been a fan of for a long time.” He also attended his 20th Comic-Con this year in San Diego.

Reed has said he doesn’t just want to step into Wright’s “Ant-Man,” and intends to put his own touch on the project that revolves around a heist.

That includes focusing on the conflict between Stoll’s villainous Yellowjacket and Ant-Man, and bringing in “Anchorman” writer and director Adam McKay to add more humor and Gabriel Ferrari and Andrew Barrer to further revise the script.

Feige has long stressed that directors don’t have the final say in Marvel’s films and that helming one of its projects requires collaboration with the executive and his team of producers. That’s needed in order to tell “one overall movie” that Marvel is making through its franchises. That kind of process didn’t sit well with Wright who envisioned “Ant-Man” as a smaller, standalone film.

Yet “Ant-Man” will still be “very much in the spirit of what Edgar’s original pitch was and the entire template of the movie is what Edgar originally pitched eight years ago now,” Feige says. Either way, “it’s headed in the right direction.”
