Angry Quicktime error: "file was not found"

I'm running Quicktime 6 on WinXP Pro - whenever I try to open a quicktime file that is on my hard drive, I get the following error:

Couldn't open the file "whatever.mov" because the file was not found

I get this error even on the sample.mov that came with the player!

    HELP

Try to open file with double-click on it. Don't use QuickTime's menu.

edit your favorites in the QT players and delete them all...
or another options reset the settings at the control panel and and also reset the MIME settings of QT

Tried both of the above. Still nothing. Also I tried reinstalling. FYI when I tried the MIME settings, I tried to open a .mpg and got the same error...

If I'm tracking with what you mean, you're asking if QT6 is installed on my 'puter. Yes it is. Went to the QT website and followed all the directions.

I checked my registry and QT is there, right where it should be. Of course I wouldn't know if there was something wrong with the registry if it jumped out and hit me over the cranium.

    Lightbulb a solution

I had this problem for about a year, but finally figured it out:

The reason I was getting this error (hopefully we have the same reason!) was because I had labeled my hard drive partitions as "C: Windows" "D: Data" etc.. that is, my C: was actually labeled "C: Windows". When I got rid of the colon, changing it to "C Windows", quicktime started working. Very strange error. If you have non-alphanumeric characters in your hard drive labels, that's probably the problem!

To change the label on a hard drive partition, open windows explorer (windows key + E), right click on a drive, go to 'properties' and change whatever is in the top text box.

I caught on to the problem when I was able to open a MOV file that was on a digital video camera SD memory card: The only difference between the card and a hard drive partition (other than it being a card and not an internal hard drive) was that I hadn't given the card a label, it had the default "Removable Drive" (or whatever) label...
