    Thumbs up

Thanks for putting up the list of nominees, Mischa! Yeah, I would guess that The Hours will most likely get the nod for Best Picture. Surely LOTR TTT is a shoe-in for Visual Effects, IMHO.

I hadn't forgotten. The spfx for Attack of the Clones were pretty cool but, the spfx for LOTR TTT were absolutely amazing, especially Gollum! I found it pretty easy to forget that I was watching CGI for much of the flic.

i am hoping that SW will win. yes, TTT was good in FX. however, the cgi was created on film that was scanned into a computer, then exported out. SW was done completely in a computer and therefore the FX are seamless with its environment and looks better. basically, that means, in TTT, the non cgi environment looks a little grainy (because it is film. film is always grainy) and the non grainy CG looks almost out pf place. there is none of that in SW....

but...if the award goes to best use of CG...then it should be TTT. but i believe it is the best creationof CG, which SW was the only film last year to do this, should get it ....

    Spirited Away

    Best supporting actress:
    Queen Latifah in Chicago

can you say 'what the?'... this was a very forgettable role

    Best actor:
    Nicolas Cage in Adaptation

This is great too! One of the first times i REALLY like Cage. And he didn't make any of his stupid faces!

    Best cinematography:

Two Towers should have been included in this one

    Best documentary:
    Bowling for Columbine

Thank god! This was by far the best docu of the year

Music written for a motion picture:
    Lose Yourself from 8 Mile

This is a shocker. Great song and fits the movie well... but I didn't think the academy would acknowledge it

    Best Screenplay:
    Adaptation

winner... for sure.... no doubt.... please?

    Best Movie:

    Chicago will take it.

Re: And the nominees are ....

    Here's my picks:

Best motion picture of the year

    THE HOURS (Paramount and Miramax)

(Lord of The Rings, deserved an nomination nod, but I don't think it'll win with the caliber of movies it's up against. The Hours is a likely win, and a deserving win)

Performance by an actor in a leading role (Tough choices!!!)

    Nicolas Cage in ADAPTATION

Performance by an actor in a supporting role

    John C. Reilly in CHICAGO

Performance by an actress in a leading role

    Nicole Kidman in THE HOURS

(This will be a very contencious category, I would say Kidman and Zellweger have equal shots-However I think Kidman will win)

Performance by an actress in a supporting role

    Julianne Moore in THE HOURS

Best animated feature film of the year

    SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON

(Sorry to the Spirited Away supporters, but I think the Academy won't go for an Anime this year)

    Achievement in art direction

    GANGS OF NEW YORK (Miramax)

    Achievement in cinematography

    ROAD TO PERDITION

    (No Lord of The Rings?!?!?)

    Achievement in costume design

GANGS OF NEW YORK (Miramax) Sandy Powell

    Achievement in directing

    THE PIANIST - Roman Polanski

    Best documentary feature

    WINGED MIGRATION

    Achievement in film editing

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

    Achievement in makeup

    THE TIME MACHINE

(The Time Machine and Frieda in the same category? Wierd...)

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)

FAR FROM HEAVEN (Focus Features) Elmer Bernstein

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)

Lose Yourself from 8 MILE (Universal) - Eminem

    Achievement in sound

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

    Achievement in sound editing

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

    Achievement in visual effects

    SPIDER-MAN

    Adapted screenplay

ADAPTATION (Sony Pictures Releasing) Screenplay by Charlie Kaufman and Donald Kaufman

    Original screenplay

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (IFC/Gold Circle Films) Written by Nia Vardalos

We'll see what happens in a month!

Spike Lee's 25th Hour would get nominated for SOMETHING in a perfect world. Also, I hope that Chicago doesn't get too many awards. I just think it is stupid to give every single person in a movie a nomination because the overall film was good. The categories should be independent of each other.

Also, Adaptation should win best adapted screenplay. Where was Spike Jonze's nomination?

Strange that Hable Con Ella (Talk to Her) didn't get a Best Foreing Film nomination, but that makes me rather happy. Mies Vailla Menneisyyttä (Man Without A Past) could actually win. Thanks to Hable Con Ella for not being there. If Man Without a Past won, it would be Finland's first Oscar award, while this is Finland's first nomination. Have any of you seen it? It's strange and hillarious, but excelent.

Yeah that should be interesting to say the least. The best part of the original song category is that we'll see U2 perform, and hopefully win.

Two things that surprise me. Peter Jackson not being nominated for direction. Secondly, Howard Shore also not being nominated in original score. I felt that the score for TTT was a lot better than FOTR for which he took home the Oscar last year for.
You're waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you can't be sure. But it doesn't matter - because we'll be together.

such a fuzz about Academy Awards... again...
I think I'm one of the only few that don't care much about Academy Awards....

This year is not SO obvious... but... anyway I found next statement very true... and this is why I don't like Academy Awards at all... (found this at some movie page)

The Oscar is no longer the award for the best of cinema, but the award for the best among the most popular, or sometimes, just the most popular. Bidding for the Oscar has more and more become like a political campaign. Studios are sending in their bid for each possible category and are hoping to cash in from a few awards they grabbed. An award will transform a movie, an actor, a director, or a producer, into a cash cow for the studio

Some people are nominated (and some even awarded) not becouse of their work but becouse they are 'cream' and they 'deserve' award becouse of their status... Like Halle Berry is good actresses.... or this year's Queen Latifah... pleeeeease!
And there are each year political awards... one year for Jews.. one year for Bosnians... and things.... like they support movies from unrecognized countries like Hong Kong & Taiwan but they don't support movies form Palestina etc.

anyway... few favourites from the list: About Schmidt, Spirited Away, Hero, Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson (I didn't see all movies listed but this is my selection)

What do you mean by THIS YEAR ... did the academy EVER go for an Anime? If not for Spirited Away, they will never go for it. It's Miyazaki's final movie, and prolly his best.
