    Lightbulb Godfather Part 4?

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Paramount Pictures, home of the three "Godfather" movies, will have first crack at screen rights to a new installment of late author Mario Puzo's Mafia series, which is in the planning stages at Random House, Variety reports.

Whether the studio considers that an offer it cannot refuse remains to be seen.

"We hope Paramount or some other studio will want to buy the movie rights, and it is our intention to see that happen," said Jonathan Karp, Random House Trade Group's vice president-senior editor.

He was Puzo's editor when the author died in 1999, and Karp has spent the last several months tying down a rights deal with Puzo's estate to draft another writer to continue the Corleone saga. Puzo's estate controlled the literary rights to the characters created by the author.

Word of the book plans began leaking late last week when Karp emailed select literary agents canvassing for a top author to concoct a new tale. The information was published in the New Yorker. It is potentially the largest sequel deal made for a work of a deceased author since "Scarlett," the "Gone With the Wind" line extension that fetched $5 million. Karp would not comment on the deal Random House made with the Puzo estate, but acknowledged it was substantial. He was also braced for the inevitable skepticism on revisiting a book that was critically acclaimed and sold 22 million copies.

"These characters just keep pulling you back in," Karp said. "There is enormous continuing interest in the Corleone family, and a great opportunity to tell a story that could take place before, during or after the original book. Mario once told me he wished he had done more with Sonny Corleone's character, and there was certainly more opportunity to explore the singer Johnny Fontaine. And Michael Corleone did make an appearance at the beginning and end of 'The Sicilian,' because he had a relationship with the freedom fighter."

Karp said that it was too early to know who would write the book, and a choice won't be made until a final selection of story outlines are accumulated November 4. He is aiming high, noting that even though a deal for Pat Conroy to scribble the "Gone With the Wind" sequel fell apart, Conroy had the pedigree of the writer he was hoping to hire. "We're looking for a connected author, in the best sense of the word."

Karp says the original was a classic, and the idea is not to compete with it, but rather to "continue the story in an entertaining and artful way that will make his readers very happy."

    Please God no.
At the center of the world there is a statue of a girl. She is standing near a well with a bucket bare and dry. I went and looked her in the eyes and she turned me into sand. This clumsy form that I despise scattered easy in her hands. And it came to rest upon a beach, with a million others there. We sat and waited for the sea to stretch out so that we could disappear into the endlessness of blue, into the horror of the truth. We are far less than we knew.

Yes, we are far less than we knew.

but not the godfather! it's just perfect the way it is. it's almost classic! 4th would ruin the trilogy. what is this world comin to?

    Godfather 4 Production Bits

    http://www.moviehole.net/

The Herald Sun in Melbourne has more on The Godfather 4. According to the paper, a Hollywood Studio is in negotiations with heads of Melbourne and Queensland about filming the movie there late next year.

"An Australian industry insider said a big Hollywood studio had talks about shooting some of the film in Melbourne and Queensland. Shooting is expected to begin late next year," says the article. "Publisher Random House yesterday confirmed it had signed a deal with the estate of Godfather author Mario Puzo, who died in 1999".

Have you heard anything from Coppola about a GODFATHER IV?

Andy: No. There was a moment where Francis did want to have Mario [Puzo] write a script. I knew that Francis had this story that him and Mario had worked out, to do a parallel story of a piece of the book that has never been told, which is the [19]30s. In the 30s, Sonny Corleone, who was always Mario’s favorite character, would basically be Leo [DiCaprio] in his 20s, or you know, Leo could play him. And, then he would do a parallel story of my character [Sonny Corleone’s son] in the future, you know, running amok…Anyway it accelerated, and all of the sudden it was like, this would be a very interesting movie. Because, Robert DeNiro could play the Godfather, and Leo DiCaprio could play Sonny, and you could get a couple of younger people to play Michael and Fredo and Tom. So on one side of the movie, you would have the demographic that you would be looking for, you know the young kids, and then on the other side…you can actually bring Al [Pacino] back, because he died a very old guy. But Mario [Puzo] passed away…after that, I have never really heard anything more about it. I have asked Francis about it, and his attitude is, “Yeah, I can do it,” but you know, they have to hire me, I can’t hire them. [Laughs.]

The curious thing about GODFATHER IV is that every single person that I encounter, every day, I get people asking me, “When is GODFATHER IV?” and the fascination to me is, with all the movies that Paramount makes and takes risks on, you know?
ok so its dead as of now
