Movies you (probably) haven't seen but should, in no particular order:

    Donnie Darko
A great and extremely overlooked movie, and one of the most original I've ever seen. It mixes a bunch of different genres of film, and works perfectly. If you'd like to be challenged, and totally entertained, rent this one.

    Magnolia
A fascinating epic film about despair, love, and regret... this one will leave you in tears, er, I mean, sad, and wanting more, don't miss it.

    Jacob's Ladder
One of the most terrifying intense films I've ever seen. A great psychological horror film, with enough frights to boot. This movie really makes you think too. Don't watch this one alone, you'll be having nightmares for weeks.

    Memento
The movie is backwards, and the main character has short term memory loss, need I say more? Are people manipulating him? Or is he being paranoid? Who really killed his wife? Who can he trust? Definitely check this one out if you haven't already.

    Requiem For A Dream
An extremely stylistic and intense look at human addiction. Be ready to be depressed after this one, but it's worth it if just to see the awesome 'out of the box' filming techniques Aronofsky employs.

    Run Lola Run
This cool German film is really great. Lola has 10 minutes to get to her boyfriend with a large sum of money, or a mob boss will kill him. A great look at what can happen if you could do things over again... plus the extremely kinetic techno music and shooting styles will have you bouncing off the walls.

    Strange Days
An EXTREMELY overlooked sci-fi flick from '95 about the eve of the new millenium, where there's an underground with data discs that record people's memories, and you can experience them first-hand. A futuristic mystery... great performances all around, this movie will keep you glued to the screen, definitely in my top 5 best sci-fi movies of all-time.

Four Rooms (skip the first two parts)
Once you get past the very stupid and unfunny first two parts of this movie, you get to the good stuff... one segment written & directed by Robert Rodriguez, and the other written, directed by & starring Quentin Tarantino. The Rodruguez one is great, and it had me laughing to tears. The Tarantino one drags on a little, with a lot of classic Tarantinoian dialogue (which got a little annoying), but the payoff is great. Check this out if you have an hour to kill.

    About Schmidt
One minute you're laughing hysterically, the next you're balling your eyes out... that's really the best way to describe this movie. Jack Nicholson really departs from his mannerisms, and the whole movie is filled with dark satire and sad truths, this one really isn't to be missed... deeply moving, especially the final shot.

    Storytelling
I really wasn't sure what to think of this movie (from the director of Happiness and Welcome To The Dollhouse, also both great films) when I first saw it, but it sure as hell makes you think, and the acting in this movie really struck me as being real... like you could peek into someone's house and actually see this going on. The performances are subtle and great, and the first and second parts of the movie are really interwoven to make sense... although I found the first part slightly distateful.

    Amelie
This light-hearted French film is a fantasy and comedy, and I'm rather surprised that it worked as well as it did! The mixture of styles is very different, not often seen, and I found it to be quite mesmorizing.

    Bound
Ah where to start... the first film by the now world famous Wachowski Brothers, is about two women who become lovers and decide to steal money from the mob. You see hints of their unique shooting styles, and not to mention one of the hottest lady on lady love scenes in the movies today... Gina Gershon & Jennifer Tilly... guys... don't miss this one.

Natural Selection (good luck finding this one)
This little-known film is about a psychotic serial killer in Texas who leaves severed heads in people's mailboxes, and thinks God is speaking to him, and the crazed FBI agent searching for him who thinks he sees demons (ala Jacob's Ladder). I was thouroughly entertained by this part horror film part mockumentary (the interviews of the small southern country townspeople are HILARIOUS), and if you have the chance to see it, take it! This isn't available on home video, I wish it was. (Check the listings for Showtime and The Movie Channel, you might catch it there.)

And yeah, in response to the questions, skip Blair Witch... it has its moments... its very extremely short moments... but not worth it.

Oh yeah... [comic book guy voice] Best ensemble cast ever: Magnolia

Is Full Frontal any good? I've been tempted to rent it.

I haven't seen any Godfather movies either.

Actually, as many movies as I've seen, there are still countless others that I want to see. Oh well.
If you can stay calm, while all around you is chaos...then you probably haven't completely understood the seriousness of the situation.

    OK

u people scare me. I haven't seen a lot of movies but not seeing Godfather or Platoon or Apocalypse Now should be punishable. Same with Die HArd. See Memento, see Blair With 1 (don't ever watch 2 it's such crap) but only if u go to the woods. I saw it and went camping hte next day. Let's just say I didn't catch much sleep then.

and of course see Fight Club

Thumbs up More movies not to miss.

Another way to describe this thread is movies you take with you to friends' houses cause you want them to experience the movie but figure they never heard of it or figured they would not like it or figured it was too ancient.

These are in no particular order:

Triplets of Belleville: modern animated quirky silent movie
Apocolypse Now (not the Redux!): mind-blowing stuff
Jane White is Sick and Twisted: You will never get the title song out of your head...never! Bizarre uneven flick, has a character you will never forget...Burger.
Pink Floyd The Wall: Very cool...turn it up!
    Badder Santa: twisted funny stuff
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (a Spielberg flick): tis like a dream
Hero (Jet Li): Forget all that Crouching Tiger crap...this is the best of the lot.
About Schmidt: Watch this with your parents.
The Station Agent: Simple film flat out tells a good funny touching story.
Southpark Bigger Longer and Uncut: A lot of F laughs
My Fair Lady: Watch this with your significant other.
Lawrence of Arabia: Long, slow, but HUGE cool parts.
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog: OMG
Eddie Izzard: Cross-dressing comedian is too kewl and clever.
Ron White they call me Tater Salad: Best comedian going right now.
The Others: Great ghost flick, a must see.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Modern Rock Opera with a very big blonde twist.
Jesus Christ Superstar: Unbelievable rock musical...awesome. Do not avoid this because you do not like the subject. Atheists rock to this.
Hair: Fun rock musical. It seems dated but that is why it fun.
Raise the Red Lantern: Watch with your significant other.
The General (Buster Keaton): Very entertaining...the only old silent flick I actually enjoy.
The Natural: Baseball movie is a bit slow but a must see for sports types.
Slapshot: I hate hockey but this has some very funny stuff.
Major League: Funniest baseball movie ever made.
Caddyshack: If you have not seen this then you will be lost on a golf course where everybody constantly throws out lines from this movie.
Shaolin Soccer: Kung-fu satire mixed with hilarious soccer bits.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Too funny
The Three Amigos: Very stupid funny
Joe Dirt: A lot of people think this is great stuff, a lot don't. I love it.
Up in Smoke: Pot classic from Cheech and Chong
Run Lola Run: AWESOME! The dog on the stairway is the key to events. My dog's pedigree name is Lola Franca Potente after the movie. This is subtitled but only requires some banal reading in the very beginning...then it takes off and the music takes over the rest of the way. Turn it up!
