Variety reports that director Baz Luhrmann and producer Dino De Laurentiis have relocated their forthcoming production of Alexander the Great from Morocco to Australia due to the recent terrorist bombings in Casablanca. The production, which will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman, had already constructed a studio in Ouarzazate solely for Alexander but that won't change De Laurentiis' mind.

"Unless the situation changes in five or six months," De Laurentiis advised Variety, "any important American actor could be a target. That is a risk I cannot take." Ouarzazate is within 300 miles of Casablanca.

The trade paper adds that Aussie-born Luhrmann "expects to start shooting digital footage in November" before rehearsals begin in January 2004.

Oliver Stone's rival project may be poised to beat the Luhrmann/De Laurentiis epic before the cameras but it will be filming partly in Morocco. No word yet on whether Stone's film will relocate now, too.
