Is that a "Firefly" on the screen?

Ok so a “Buffy” movie is a long way down the track [if ever] but one Joss Whedon series which definitely looks like heading to the big screen is “Firefly”. The show lasted about an arms length on TV, but in that time, picked up quite a few fans. Needless to say, Whedon and co. would like the adventures of Capt. Mal Reynolds and crew to continue.

Talking to SciFi Wire, actor Nathan Fillion spilled the beans on a possible movie. "Right now, our hopes and dreams are pinned on a Firefly movie, which TV can't cancel us out of," Fillion said in an interview at the May 18 Saturn Awards, where he was honored with Cinescape's Face of the Future Award. "We're talking silver screen, wide release, big old deal. So everything's looking very positive, so we're going to keep our fingers crossed."

Series creator Joss Whedon would write and direct the movie, Fillion added.

Meantime, the show will also gain new life on DVD, which Fillon is currently working on. "I just finished commentary with Alan Tudyk [Wash] on 'War Stories,' an episode where he and I got tortured. ... And then, Monday, I go in to do audio commentary with Joss Whedon for 'Serenity,' the two-hour pilot."

Its good to see Whedon make a good show not looking back @ the last crap he made.
I'm a major FireFly fan and with only 13 episodes released, I was very angry when FOX canned the show (among many) but happy to hear the series coming to DVD. Again..... i was overly pleased to read this news. I do hope this movie will be made so the rest of the ppl who haven't seen the series can enjoy or possibly revive the show.

This was actually one of the few decent shows on television that I enjoyed. I too, was angry when they pulled it off the air simply because they didn't get enough viewers. People were busy watching crap like American Idol... Whatever happened to TV?!?

I only caught one episode of the show. It was alright. Although it perfectly illustrated the justification for sound in outer space. I thought the space sequences were dull without sound.

I would love to see Firefly on screen! I think it was a great fun show. Am planning to buy the DVDs when they come out (maybe in December...)

    A comment on Lehm's post:
Soundless space is one of the most accuate technical points of the show. Remember there is no sound in space. Yeah it definitely is boring, but I was glad it was like that.

Firefly is set four hundred years from today in the Union of Planets, a government established after a bitter civil war. Under the leadership of Malcolm Reynolds, a renegade who fought against the new government, the crew of the Firefly-class vessel "Serenity" must struggle to survive any way they can. They fly to the border planets to keep away from the Alliance and below it's radar. This series has been described as a "science fiction western" but will be different from other space based shows as it will feature no aliens.
Good to see a scifi having no aliens and deals mostly with human relationships living under & against government shadows. To describe this series IMO... its like the adventures of Han Solo onboard the Millennium Falcon. Always wondered what a series about a rouge trader would be like. FireFly made that possible and was perfect.

STARRING: Adam Baldwin, Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Chjwetel Ejiofor
    DIRECTOR: Joss Whedon
    GENRE: Sci-Fi / Action / Adventure
    RELEASE DATE: April 22, 2005

    SYNOPSIS:
The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, "Serenity." He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board "Serenity" herself.
"Firefly" fans the world-round will get a look at an original sci-fi adventure based on the acclaimed "Firefly" series, in which a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future eke out a living pulling off small crimes and transports-for-hire aboard their ship, Serenity. When they take on two new passengers, they find themselves at the center of a deadly hunt that pits Serenity against the greatest forces in the galaxy. Joss Whedon, the Academy® and Emmy-nominated writer/director of the worldwide television phenomena "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel", makes his feature film directorial debut with the futuristic action-adventure. Just like Spy Hunter an innovative action-adventure video game, and an exciting multi-titled publishing program will expand the Serenity universe
