I just watched this movie last night, and really enjoyed it. It’s a story about Charlie Kaufman (Nicholas Cage), who is assigned the next to impossible task of adapting a novel about orchids into a movie. While the novel is good, Kaufman declares that it can’t be made into a movie. In real life, Charlie Kaufman, who also wrote the screenplay for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, was hired to write the screenplay for the novel. Adaptation is what came of it.

The acting in this movie was top notch in my book, especially from Nicholas Cage, who I'm not a big fan of. Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep are the other two main actors, with good supporting roles from Tilda Swinton, Brian Cox, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

What’s interesting about Adaptation is how similar Charlie and Donald Kaufman (brothers) are to Austin and Lee (brothers) in Sam Sheperd’s play, True West. In this play, Austin is a Hollywood screenwriter who is working on a movie script when his brother Lee, who’s been living in the desert for years, decides to stay with him for a while. Eventually, the movie producer that is working closely with Austin, decides to instead produce Lee’s idea for a classic Western film, which is rather cliché and unoriginal. Now compare this to Adaptation, and picture Charlie as Austin and Donald as Lee, and there you have it. This is obviously not a coincidence.

“I don’t want to cram in sex or guns or car chases or characters learning profound life lessons or growing or coming to like each other or overcoming obstacles to succeed in the end. The book isn’t like that, and life isn’t like that, it just isn’t. I feel strongly about this.” –Charlie Kaufman (In the movie)

    Go see this movie.
