    The Great Wall (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2034800/

The Hollywood lead whitewashing of history continues.

If I were Chinese or Asian, I would find this movie racist, prejudice and offensive toward my culture.

The West owe many of what of the things they enjoy today to China - invented by an advanced culture when the population in Europe were still in its cultural, industrial and agricultural infancy.

Yet this movie makes China looks incompetent and of course, a White man in 960 A.D. comes along and saves the entire Chinese Song Dynasty.

The strangest thing about this movie is that is a joint Hollywood China production and directed by one China's greatest film director.

Weird that they (the Chinese involved in this production) allowed it to happen.

There's Something About Mary (1998) The Director's Cut

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129387/

This movie is still funny after almost 19 years and Cameron Diaz never looked better than!

The director's cut has 10 +/- minutes of extra scenes.

I don't remember this scene in the theatrical version or the VHS version:

After all this years and half a dozen viewings I still have a lingering question.

How is Mary's parents house shaped? How does Ted looks out of the bathroom window from downstairs and he can see Mary and her Mother in one of the upstairs bedrooms???

The house must be L shaped or U shaped or something???

    Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2119532

Desmond Doss was a U.S. Army soldier in World War II who refused to even touch a rifle in basic training because of his religious beliefs.

The U.S. Army tried to boot him out of the service first by having the drill instructors abuse him so he would quit basic training. His own platoon mates called him coward and traitor and they even beat him hoping he would quit. When that failed the Army tried to rate him a section 8: unfit for duty due to mental illness so they could throw him out of the army. When that also failed the Army attempted to court martial him and sentence him to prison in Leavenworth.

Doss fought the the court martial and won and he was allowed to remain in the Army as a Combat Medic.

During the Battle of Okinawa, Doss single handendly saved 75 of his fellow men: all of them wounded. Many of these men were the same ones who were with him at basic training and called him a coward and beat him.

Doss did so while under enemy fire during a 12 hour period, most of that at night, by lowering them down a 350 feet ridge, one at a time, using a rope.

For his actions, Doss became the first and only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for actions above and beyond the call of duty during World War II.

Directed by Mel Gibson, this is the Best and Most Important war movie since Saving Private Ryan.

Hacksaw Ridge not only deserves to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Andrew Garfield), Best Actress (Teresa Palmer), Best Editing, Best Screenplay, etc. etc., it deserves to win in each category.

If the Academy snub this film because they have a personal agenda against Mel Gibson, then every member of the Academy can ducking go to hell!

Decent war film from South Korea loosely based on:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle...n_infiltration

Llam Neeson plays General Douglas MacArthur with great conviction.

There was only one problem with this film.

I kept waiting for Neeson to pick up a Thompson submachine gun or a Colt 1911 .45 acp pistol or a M-1 Garand and by himself, take on the entire 7,500-men strong North Korean defense troops garrison stationed at In-Cheon.

Major Dundee (1965) Extended Restored Version

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059418/

Peckinpah is a good director but he has a history of making messy films and this is one of them.

Filmed in Mexico without a concrete complete script and combined with Peckinpah getting distracted by the local entertainment: lots of tequila, latina women (including having an affair with a Mexican actress in the cast that he ended up marrying while on the set) during the filming of this movie, Chalton Heston had to take over.

Then the studio cut the shooting schedule down which caused the filming to end abruptly even after Heston gave up his entire salary to keep Peckinpah on the shoot and keep the filming going.

Even with this 29 min longer restored extended version, it still looks messy.

A dozen set pieces with no end and no beginning and most of them with no relation to one another just pieced together to form a single film creating several continuity goofs.

Peckinpah is one of those talented directors who directed a dozen or so movies and only a few of them were remembered and he never found the respect and fame he deserved.

    The Crash (2017)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3297382/

Stay the heck away from this movie if you value your time and intelligence!

I watched about 20 min of it.

It thinks people are dumb and have no knowledge of how computer works, how internet works, how server works, how the stock market works; therefore it's easy to shove this stupidity down the audience's throats!

If it was so easy for anyone to hack and manipulate the stock market computers (still running on DOS supposedly) as this movie wants us to believe, we will all be billionaires.

I don't know who this Aram Rappaport director is but whoever gave him the $ to make this film must be a bigger idiot than he is.

I give it 0/5 for the 20 min I watched.

p.s. look at the cast names on the movie poster. The only explanation I have for them for signing up to be in this film is they all needed a new Ferrari and Lamborghini. What a waste of talent!

    Doctor Strange (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1211837/

In the past 8 or so years, movie goers been bombarded almost yearly with the same comic book movies, one of the following alternating nearly every year: Iron Man franchise movie, Avengers franchise movie, Thor franchise movie, Spider-Man franchise movie, Captain America franchise movie, then you add the Batman movies, the Superman movies, the X-Men movies, combined with the occasional movie not related to anything I named above like Ant-Man or Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy, and you have a monotonous continuous repetitive sequence of the same superhero comics books based movies looping over and over year after year.

Doctor Strange breaks that monotony. It's different, it's fun, it's fresh, it has incredible mind-bending dizzyingly captivating visual special effects and better yet, it doesn't have the bickering and preaching dialogue we've seen all too common in the Iron Man and Avengers and Captain America franchise.

Furthermore, how many more times can you stand seeing another Captain America, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman or Avengers movie?

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2513074/

The writing, the pacing, the messy back and forth flashbacks, the characters that you don't care about, the movie cliche like the pretty cheerleader that falls for Billy....

plus was there any qualified miltary advisors hired during the production of this film?

The Hollywood visual mentality: let's load up the weapons with a bunch of junk. They will look cool to the movie audience but they will provide no function whatsoever in the battlefield:

Then there was the casting... Chris Tucker being one of them... loud and obnoxious he doesn't belong in this film.

If only the producers spent more time worrying about the right things that make a movie great than filming this with 4K 120 fps filming cameras...

Finally this also felt like a poor man's poor attempt to make a Flag of our Fathers for the Iraq war and in this case, that poor man happens to be director Ang Lee.

Why did he even make this?

    The Disappointments Room (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2364897/

I did some research. Folks in the old days especially prominent folks with wealth and social status will build disappointments rooms and put their children in there. Children that were born with a physical handicapped or with visual deformities. So the family will not be embarassed by the child. The child is locked up in this room with no way out. Never feeling the sun or rain on their face. They will be not very well cared for and will most likely be malnourished and sick from neglect and in many cases, some will die from such neglect or if the parents get sick of caring for the child, they will kill that child. No one would ever know because no one ever knew that child was born in the first place.

Man! Talk about there are some messed up people in this world!

Anyway, this could had been a good movie but it's not. Where's the 3rd act, the final act?

A lot left unexplained and unfinished.

The movie ended ABRUPTLY with 9 minutes to go so we can get 9 minutes of rolling credits!

Did the producers run out of money and couldn't film anymore?

Then there are a couple of scenes that felt out of place because either a scene preceding them was not filmed or was edited out.

    For instance, this!!

The broken dishes and stuff around the dining room table. The movie just jumped from them preparing for dinner with guests over to the not very good climax to this scene. When did all that stuff get broken and who did it and why?

Furthermore, there are many women in this world who are beautiful natural brunettes and look equally beautiful when they go blonde.

I love Kate Beckinsale but I must say she doesn't look good at all as a blonde. I think this is the first time I'd ever seen her blonde.

    A final thought!!

Do the producers of this movie really wants us to believe that guy is married to someone as HOT as Kate Beckinsale???

We are just not buying it!!

    The Edge Of Seventeen (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1878870/

Do not over look nor underestimate this film because it's a movie about a teenage girl.

This is the best teenage romance film since Fast Times At Ridgemont High, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mean Girls, Juno and Sixteen Candles.

Honest, refreshing, full of heart, emotions and laughs.

Young actress Hailee Steinfeld turns in a great performance that will be tugging at your heartstrings:

she plays a 17-year old high school girl coping with everyday's teenage girl's problems: finding love, teenage sex, social status, making friends, losing friends, dealing with school. parents and siblings.

For her role in this film, Steinfeld was nominated by the Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

She didn't win but I hope it will give her the exposure needed to get an Academy Awards Oscar nomination nod.

    5/5

UPDATE: I didn't know the Academy already announced this year's nominations almost a week ago. Usually they wait until February after the Super Bowl. Hailee Steinfeld didn't get nominated. The Oscars sucks nowadays!

    Villa Rides (1968)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063775/

with Yul Brynner, Robert Mitchum, Charles Bronson.

I've seen half a dozen or more films with Yul Brynner over the course of my life time and I think this is the first time I've ever seen him with hair on his head!

He plays Pancho Villa in this movie.

Most of the stuff portrayed in this movie never really happened during the Mexican Revolution.

It's a silly movie and it didn't get good reviews.

Roger Ebert said at the time of this movie's release that he was getting tired with what was back then in 1968 an onslaught of shoot them up Westerns and it was beginning to get to him.

But you do have to give Brynner and Mitchum and Bronson credit for giving it their best.
