    Aftermath (2017)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4581576/

We all know who Arnold Schwarzenegger is and probably half of the world's population has at one time or another seen at least one of his action film.

He is great as an action hero and he has also proven himself worthy as a comedian in movies like Twins and Kindergarden Cop and Junior.

But just like everyone else's, time will catch up on you and Arnold is getting old: he will be 70 in 3 months.

So his days of playing the action hero that saves the day and the world are almost over and to keep his movie career going and his star from fading, he is branching out into dramatic roles.

He did it with the recent Zombie movie Maggie and now he is doing again with this airline disaster drama Aftermath, based on the person https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitaly_Kaloyev who committed murder after losing his family in this disaster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9C...-air_collision

Well it just doesn't work! Sorry Arnold.

There is nothing wrong with this movie. Arnold is just not right for the main role.

It's like watching an old man at a nursing home fumbling around not sure what to do with his day. Furthermore, it's eerie to see Arnold looking so old both in appearance and in his mannerism.

Maybe in time Arnold will become a good dramatic actor like Clint Eastwood did after he stopped playing action heroes.

    Who knows?

Arnold may even become an Academy Award winning director like Eastwood; but until then, I'd rather take my chances on his upcoming Conan movie and 1988 Twins sequel.

    A Cure for Wellness (2016)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4731136/

In recent years, there has been so many movies that are clocking in between 1 hour and 10 min to barely 1 hour and 25 min, rolling ending credits inclusive. Most of the time these "shortened" movies suffer from poor plot, lousy editing and they are just no good. We all have seen these films and as we walk out of the theater, we felt we were robbed of our movie ticket money and our precious time.

Here we have a psychotic horror thriller movie with a good premise: a young up and coming corporate executive is sent to a wellness spa to retrieve his CEO where he will soon discovers nothing at the spa is what it seems.

This movie started out well and it could had worked if it clocked in at just under 2 hours with better editing, a faster pacing, and a smoother story line but alas, it wasn't to be.

Gore Verbinski who started his directing career so well with movies like The Mexican, The Ring and Mousehunt and then lost his way rehashing the same Pirates of the Caribbeans movies over and over decided to over inflate this movie at 2 hours and 26 min.

Long, long before this movie was even 2/3 over, you had already stop caring about the character and you didn't care for the plot twist and the big reveal that just took too long to appear.

Not sure what Verbinski was aiming for with this film or what his motivation was but one thing is for sure, he took a total career mistep by bungling up what could had been one of the best psychological thriller in year. Maybe he is looking for redemption after getting his career stuck on a dead end one way "Pirates of the Caribbean" track? Who knows! But he didn't get redemption here.

Countless times during my viewing of this over long and tedious movie where I felt like the poor folks who were stuck listening to Ted Striker telling his war stories:

    Kong: Skull Island (2017)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3731562/

It was alright but nothing to write home about.

Most of the characters in the film are just there to become food.

Then you have 2 female characters, a photographer and a scientist who don't do much.

One is constantly taking photos when she should be running real fast for her life.

The other one doesn't do much scientist stuff, pretty much just mope around and every now and then she is given a one line dialogue.

She is played by a Chinese actress and this film being one of the many recent Chinese financed Hollywood productions, she was most likely put in there as part of the deal of getting production money from Chinese investors.

Supposedly this film will tie in with 2 more future King Kong films.

    Striking Distance (1993)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108238/

I think Sarah Jessica Parker looks better in here than in SATC.

She looked old and wrinkly in SATC and that was only 5 years after this film.

    according to IMBD and WIKI:

The movie was filmed in 13 weeks in the summer of 1992 and was scheduled to be released on May 21, 1993. But after the original cut was shown to a test audience that hated it, extensive re-shooting was done in Los Angeles. Story changes, and removal of some plot points, were done to try and make the movie better plus a new ending was also filmed. Because of this, release date was pushed from May to September 17th.
If the stinker including the shitty ending with the shitty dialogue I've just watched is the result of those extensive re-shootings to make it better, the original cut must had been really really really bad.

There are also a few seconds in this trailer that weren't in the cut I watched.

No idea what were the intentions of this whitewashed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitewashing_in_film) version of the popular Japanese Manga comic series and animated film.

Whatever their intentions were, I can assure they were not honorable!

I have nothing against Scarlett but this is one movie she should not had agreed to be in.

The main character should had been played by a Japanese actress or at the very minimum by an Asian actress.

    Life (2017)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5442430/

Scientists are going to be the ones who will doom the human race with their stupidity like the ones in this movie on the ISS.

Sure many of them do important life saving research and work but some of them are just idiots who shouldn't be allowed to play Gods.

They come across an alien life in the form of an amoeba so to speak and what they do?

Oh all the tests shows it's not made of any kind of cellular composition we've ever seen and encoutered on Earth but let's name it and play with it.

If you find a container with a liquid and the container is unlabeled, will you stick your finger in it or even get the tip of your finger wet with it and then bring it up to your mouth to taste it?

Same if you see a land animal or sea creature you have never encountered in your life before, will you extend your hand and finger to touch it so it may bite it off?

    No you don't!

But the scientist in this movie just sticks his hand into this amoeba which has been for unexplained scientific reasons growing exponentially daily.

Well you can imagine the rest of the movie. We seen this premise before haven't we? In other sci fi films and horror films.

There is a reason why there is an idiom that says:

    "Curiousity Killed the Cat!"

Sometimes it makes me wonder how many of the uncurable diseases that are afflicting mankind today were the results of stupid scientists tinkling with things they don't understand.

I have heard stories that AIDS and HIV is one of them and it was created during the Vietnam War by the CIA looking for a biological weapon to wipe out the North Vietnamese by weakening their immune system after the CIA previous effort with Agent Orange to wipe out their natural growing food supply wasn't working quick enough.

Under Sandet (2015) aka Land Of Mine

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3841424/

We all have seen plenty of documentaries and movies on World War 2 showing the Allied final victory over Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and the celebrations in cities across Europe and the United States.

But we all tend to forget that World War 2 may have ended in term of hostilities, but for many the horror and the ordeal was just beginning:

millions of German soldiers were captured by the Allies in the last year of World War 2: over 3 millions by the Russian armies alone and of those, less than 1 million made it back to Germany with the last ones as late as 1956.

There were also millions of civilians from all European countries who fled eastword or westworld or southward to escape advancing invading armies and many of them who were still alive after the war ended also never made it back to their home countries, many died trying.

This is one of the many stories.

After the end of World War II, a group of German POWs, most of them newly conscripted into the rag tag armies that Hitler rustled up toward the end of the war. Most of them were boys or teenagers and many of them were handed to the Danish authorities to clear the 2.2 million mines on the West coast of Denmark.

A very sad story reminding us that most of those who fought in the German Army were not all dedicated Nazi party members but just young men and teenagers and boys forced to wear a uniform and to die for the Third Reich in a final act of desperation by their fanatical leaders to stop the advancing Allied armies from the West and from the East.

Many of them thought once the hostilities have ceased, they would be able to go home and live again; they didn't think they will become human mine sweepers and many of them died doing it.

In other words, someone had to take on the monumental task of cleaning up the huge mess that 6 years of war created (millions of mines all over Europe and Asia, unexploded ordnance, millions of dead bodies everywhere, wreckages of down airplanes, destroyed tanks and military vehicles and other war material) and rebuild the destroyed cities and the victors sure not weren't going to be the one to get their hands dirty.

This movie has received many awards and accolades world wide including a 2017 Academy Awards nomination for Best Foreign Language film:

Dang! Franco Nero makes the Man with No Name looks like a boy scout.

It was even banned in the UK from theatrical distribution until it was finally released on home video [for the first time in the UK] in 1993.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django...m)#UK_BBFC_ban

Can you believe this movie spawned 31+ unofficial sequels plus an official sequel in 1987?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_Strikes_Again

Plus the Quentino Tarantino's Django Unchained movie was loosely based on this and Franco Nero even has a role in it.

Also, not only is Franco Nero still alive, he is still kicking and kicking hard!!

Look how many movies he has made year after year non stop since Django in 1966 and look how many more he is currently attached to that are either Filming, Pre Production, Post Production, Announced, or Completed,

    The Space Between Us (2017)

    A good premise wasted!

On the first manned mission to colonize Mars, 2 months into the journey, the mission commander discovers she is pregnant.

She gives birth and the baby grows up on Mars.

When he turns 16 years old, he wants to go to Earth to see where he came from.

If you can look past the plot holes and scientific goofs that were in the movie up to now, you can still enjoy this movie but no, because the screenwriters decided to turn it into a predictable cliched and stupid teenage love story, not even a good one at that.

This movie should be retitled to The Space Between The Ears of the idiots who wrote and produced this movie because that's all there is there and not one brain among them.

Want to know how bad this film is? To rate this movie Mediocre is being generous.

    Diabolique (1996)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116095/

Predictable, dreadful, devoid of any life and soul, boring, totally unsuspenseful and unthrilling.

Appearance wise, Sharon Stone looks like a drug junkie. She also comes across the screen as she doesn't want to be in this film but hey, a paycheck is a paycheck, right?

The other female lead, critically acclaimed French actress Isabelle Adjani looks like a fish out of the water trying to recite her English language speaking lines - maybe they should had gotten a French actress who have had more experience in English speaking roles prior to this film.

The pacing was so slow! Oh so so very slow, you'd think you aged 10 years by the time you've finish watching this very painful remake of the 1955 French psychological thriller masterpiece!!

In my opinion, this movie is one of three films that quintessentially portrayed the 1980's and defined and created the big worldwide financial mess we are still in, 30 years later: greed, big corporation, over spending, the love of the excess, Reaganomics.

The other 2 films are Wall Street and Working Girl.

Helen Slater is incredibly beautiful in this film. It's too bad her attempt at creating a big screen celluloid Super Girl franchise failed.

    Becoming Bond (2017)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6110504/

    *

I have always wondered where the Bond films will be today if Lazenby did his 7 films, including On Her Majesty's Secret Service (OHMSS), and Sir Roger Moore never did Bond.

Moore would had been too old by the time Lazenby finished his 7 pictures run around the early 80's.

Will Dalton had more than 2 films if he had taken over the role sooner than 1987 and not end up being compared to Moore?

OHMSS is still IMO one of the Best Bond films ever made and I know I am not the only one who think so.

At the end, the reason Mr. Lazenby gave for turning down a 7 Bond films deal was not any of the reasons we've heard over the years: he didn't get along with Broccoli and Saltzman or he was fired or his agent advised him wrong and told him to quit the role after only one film (that's written on WIKI) or that he was just a dumb ass or a fool.

The reason he gave was he wanted to live his life by his own expectations: not by someone else's and not by how people perceived him. He wanted to live his life as George Lazenby and not as a fictional character named James Bond.

Unfortunately the one Bond film was also the cause of him losing out on a life with his first and only one true love: Belinda Fingleton.

That part of the movie was bittersweet and sad at the same time.

Nevertheless, even if Lazenby did miss out on fame and fortune, he said he was happy with his decision and his life still turned out well: he got married twice, had kids and he didn't have to deal with his life being put under a microscope and the public scrutiny of Becoming Bond.
