It's been said that it's slippery at the top, but not for Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. This year marks the tenth consecutive year that Gates, 47, has been named the richest man in America.
'Gates' net worth, currently pegged at $46 billion, has sagged significantly since the peak of the technology bubble in 1999. That year Gates was worth a staggering $85 billion, almost all of it tied up in shares of Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), the company he co-founded with fellow Forbes 400 member Paul Allen in 1975. Allen is the third-richest man in America, worth $22 billion.
Will anyone ever catch Gates? Not anytime soon. Despite the technology industry's continuing woes, Gates is still $10 billion richer than America's second-richest man, Warren Buffett ($36 billion), and more than twice as rich than technology rival Larry Ellison ($18 billion), who came in at number nine.

Wouldn't it be fair to apply communism on Bill Gates only?
Since it will suck if his money was distributed on the whole world. A better idea would be dividing it on Movie-List's 1600 members!!
28,750,000 per member! Not bad!!It is not enough 'I succeed'. Everyone else must fail.

actually even tho it seems like a lot of money - it isn't!
See, the reason that an average peson in America has it "better" (arguably) than anywhere else is because all those people with so much money make up less than 1% of all money in the US. From what I know they (rich people) pool together close to $995 billion. The other 99% of wealth lies entirely in the middle class American.

he could give A LOT of those money to charities and still be the richest man in the world.... :angel"

This reminds me of Sean Connery in Entrapment, telling Zeta-Jones, "What would you do with 9 Billion dollars you cannot do with 5 Billion?"

Oh, sorry Carl.

Either way I'd say his daughter is pretty well set
If you're not completly turned off by geeky things then it's a good read (can't recall the title) or see the movie "Pirates of Silcon Valley" The entire story behind how Microsoft got it's start....it's halarious what they got away with and what other companies (like Apple and IBM for example) LET them get away with.
Not that it wasn't hard work. It's a really great story.

Bill Gates donates $168M to fight malaria
MANHICA, Mozambique (Reuters) - The world's richest man donated $168 million to fight malaria Sunday, and urged the world to intensify its battle against a disease which kills more than one million people a year, mainly in Africa.
the thing that interest me really is that Bill Gates is a working rich man, he did not get his wealth from parents or from Royalty or treasure, he worked for it and is still working for it..
