From CNN

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Actor Tom Cruise threatened to boycott promotion of his upcoming Paramount Pictures film unless a sister cable TV network pulled a "South Park" rerun lampooning the Church of Scientology, industry sources said on Friday.
Representatives for Paramount and Cruise, a prominent Scientologist, denied he made any such threats or had anything to do with the Comedy Central network canceling plans to air a repeat of the "South Park" episode titled "Trapped in the Closet," on Wednesday.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the crudely animated cartoon hit, issued a quirky statement, filled with references to Scientology and the science-fiction writings of church founder L. Ron Hubbard, suggesting Scientology was behind the scheduling change.

"So, Scientology, you have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for Earth has just begun," the pair wrote.

"Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!"

Instead of the Tom Cruise episode, the network aired reruns of two "South Park" episodes featuring the character Chef, voiced by veteran soul singer Isaac Hayes, also a Scientologist, who quit the show earlier this week.

Comedy Central, which like Paramount is owned by Viacom Inc., declined comment on the rerun switch, other than to say: "In light of the events of earlier this week, we wanted to give Chef an appropriate tribute by airing two episodes he is most known for."

Two industry sources familiar with the situation told Reuters Comedy Central pulled the "Trapped in the Closet" episode from its "South Park" rerun rotation after Cruise threatened to cease promotion of his upcoming Paramount film, "Mission: Impossible III."

Cruise spokesman Paul Bloch said neither the actor nor his representatives "had anything to do" with the scheduling of "South Park" reruns and that Cruise had never said to anyone he would refuse to promote his film. Paramount spokeswoman Janet Hill denied any knowledge of such a threat.

"South Park," heading into its 10th season next week as one of Comedy Central's biggest hits, centers on the antics of four foul-mouthed fourth-graders in a small Colorado town.

Outlandish religious satire has been a mainstay of the show since its debut in 1997, poking fun at Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Buddhists and Muslims. One early episode featured a martial-arts duel between Jesus and Santa Claus over the true meaning of Christmas.

While Hayes cited the show's ridicule of religion generally as his reason for leaving the series, Stone said in a statement on Monday the soul singer was specifically upset about the "Trapped in the Closet" episode, which first aired last fall.

In it, the character named Stan scores so high on a Scientology test that church followers think he is the next L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise is depicted locking himself in Stan's closet and then refusing repeated requests by various characters to "come out of the closet," including John Travolta, who eventually joins Cruise in the closet.
ok, this has gone just a bit too far, we need a Crusade against these people, and don't say no, cuz I've already polished my crusader helmet and shield

Scientology

Well, this people is simply bad. Yesterday I was talking with a person that has done some visits to USA (Miami) for Tourism purposes (but he has family in the US) and, in one of those visits, he meet people that he previously encountered here in Venezuela that have offered to guide him in Miami, a thing that he accepted.

Well, as the days passes, they have various reunions for recreation and things like that (dinners at restaurants, trips around Miami) in which, apparently casual but in a constant way, references to Scientology were emerging, always limited to the lack of interest about that "religion" from my friend (and the evident reserves). They (a matrimony, he Cuban and she from the Basque Country in Spain, but living in the US) seemed to have an interest for share their Scientology beliefs with this person I'm talking about.

One day they were walking (my friend and the matrimony) and, by accident apparently, they found one of the Scientology high hierarchy members.

Another day the wife called my friend by phone and did an invitation to go to see a movie in the Scientology offices' cinema, but he refused. He told her that he prefer to go to walk with them or anything else, like a meal. Until the present moment and after that call, he never has seen them nor heard anything about them.

See this from the wikipedia article cited by Jean-Pierre Bazinet on his first post here:

Quote:
It has been alleged on FACTnet that Cruise's involvement in Scientology may be less than voluntary: "Tom Cruise became psychotic during a secret Scientology initiation in which one is told that rather than being one person, one is composed of thousands of aliens from all over the universe fighting for control of your body. After completing this initiation, known as OT III, Tom appeared sickly with black circles under his eyes and pasty skin. He said he wanted to be away from Scientology for good. He just wanted to go back to Hollywood and his home and be left alone by Scientology. This would not happen; David Miscavige ordered Cruise could not be let go. Scientology worked on Cruise day and night until he finally returned to Scientology." This quote was part of an interview with Scientology defector Jesse Prince. [22]
This is dangerous. They don't let Cruise go. If they do this with a person like Cruise, then what things they do with common people? The man I was talking above also tells me that the same thing happened with Priscilla Presley or her daughter Lisa Marie Presley. I have not found confirmation of this on wikipedia, only something about a drug treatment done by Scientology people to her.

This part is specially insane, I want to quote it again:

Quote:
...initiation in which one is told that rather than being one person, one is composed of thousands of aliens from all over the universe fighting for control of your body...

U're absolutely right. If i'll tell u please don't think about polar bear (for ex) - u will do just the opposite And one more point - if you don't understand someone that's not a reason to hate him. Truly, i don't like Tom (actor and (uhm) like a possible "friend" ), but respect all of his works etc..

Social health

For me, that's not all the point. The problem is society's health that can be affected by those so called "religions" which are, at the end, false.

I don't agree because weak-minded persons are indeed motive of concern. Those persons need to be protected.

And I believe that the governments' power for such control it's very limited. That power don't come from governments but from law. Can those cults be a new and still not measured phenomenon?

It's dangerous, as simple as that.

According to who or what you can consider a religion true or false? Every believer will consider his/her own religion true and the others false, based either on traditions or what everyone does, it depends on who's side are you.

It is not right to call other religions false or to make people turn into your belief, that's why I think people should believe whatever they feel like it as long as they stay at their side of the line.

CHEF IS BACK!

from CNN

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Soul singer Isaac Hayes may have quit his job as the voice of Chef on "South Park" after a disagreement over religion, but his character will live on when the satiric cable TV cartoon returns to Comedy Central this week, the network said Monday. Hayes and his "South Park" alter ego are at the center of an ongoing flap over an episode last November that poked fun at the Church of Scientology and its celebrity adherents, including actor Tom Cruise.

The tenth season of "South Park" will launch Wednesday with a new episode titled "The Return of Chef!", marking the "triumphant homecoming" of lusty school cafeteria cook James "Chef" McElroy to the show, the network said in a statement.

Hayes, 63, himself a follower of Scientology, surprised producers a week ago by announcing he was leaving the series because he objected to its "inappropriate ridicule" of religion, though he made no reference to the show's spoof of Scientology last fall.

Two days later, Comedy Central abruptly pulled a scheduled repeat of that episode, titled "Trapped in the Closet." Sources close to the show said the rerun was canceled after Cruise threatened to boycott promotion of his upcoming film, "Mission: Impossible III," for sister studio Paramount Pictures. (Watch why Cruise was allegedly so upset -- 2:56)

Representatives for Cruise and the studio denied this. But "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone fed the furor by issuing a statement suggesting the Church of Scientology was behind the decision to scrap the rerun.

The network has also noted that various religions including Christianity, Judaism and Islam have been targets of the show's satire since its inception.

The network statement announcing Chef's return for the "South Park" season premiere this Wednesday was a clear sign that Parker and Stone planned to use the Hayes imbroglio as further grist for their comedy.

"Knowing these guys as I do, I can't imagine that they're not going to do just that," Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox told Reuters. He added that the producers routinely "turn around" new episodes in just six days, leaving them ample time to incorporate last week's dust-up into their season debut.

Fox said he assumed someone besides Hayes would supply Chef's voice. Details of the new episode were vague.

But a network synopsis said the fictional town of South Park, Colorado, is "jolted out of a case of the doldrums when Chef suddenly reappears," leading to new antics by the group of foul-mouthed fourth graders who are the show's stars.

"While Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman are thrilled to have their old friend back, they notice that something about Chef seems different. When Chef's strange behavior starts getting him in trouble, the boys pull out all the stops to save him," the network said.

"South Park," launched in 1997, remains the highest-rated series on Comedy Central, which like Paramount, is owned by Viacom Inc.

New, related news...

Quote:
Are Scientologists plotting Chef's death?

Last week it appeared that Isaac Hayes walked out on a ten-year relationship with "South Park" over an episode that mocked Hayes' church, Scientology. He was viciously mocked by the press and the show's creators for his apparent hypocrisy and bigotry.

Yesterday, however, it was revealed that Hayes didn't quit the show. Instead, an unidentified member of the cult of Scientology did the quitting for him.

Sources indicate that Hayes has been busy recuperating from a stroke suffered on January 17. They say there's no way he would've quit the show, he loved it too much.

In the months following the airing of the Scientology-bashing "In the Closet" episode, Hayes gave at least two interviews in which he discussed any possible offense.

In January he told the "A.V. Club," "I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses and understand what we do. [Laughs.]"

The previous month, when he was asked by A.J. Hammer of he had a problem with the episode, he answered "I didn`t see it but I was told about it. But they lampoon everybody. And if you believe them, you got a problem."

But did Hayes really have a stroke on January 17? If so, it doesn't bode well. That would've been exactly 20 years to the day after the "stroke" that killed Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. A week later, on January 24, Hubbard was dead.

In the past week dark forces in the church have submitted Hayes' resignation and had the offending episode pulled from Comedy Central. How far will they go to silence dissent?
