Question for those who knows Finnish
How do you spell a girl name with 4-5 characters, beginning with the letter 'J', that sounds like 'Yawn' in English?
It wouldn't be 'Joan', would it?
The reason I asked is that I met a girl when I went to see Irreversible today. (My 'review' is posted here.) I took notice of her when we were waiting for the cinema to open, cos I somehow reckon she looks like me. (She wears glasses, causal clothes similar to mine - to some extent. We even use the same kind of mobile phone!)
When the cinema's open, like a gentlemen ( ) I let her to go in front of me at the queue. I went to the loo when she's already queued up to get in (Cinema would open in 5 minutes). I came out, and realised she's gone to the loo. Then she came out and queued behind me. I offered her to get her positions back, but she said it's okay.
So without any further conversation (Stupid me!) we got into the cinema. She took the seat a few row in front of me. I swear I really REALLY wanted to go to her row and asked if she would let me sit next to her'. But since I've never done such a thing, and fearing that I may get rejected and made the siutation awkward, I didn't. (Stupid me again!)
After the film I went to the loo again (too much liquid taken in before the movie. ). Came out of the cinema and couldn't find her. I didn't go for long so she can't be out of sight if she's left. So I waited outside, and saw her come out of the loo. I hanged around for a while, unsure of whether I should talk to her when she came out.
Finally she did come out and we spoke to each other almost at the same time, asking each other what's the opinion about the film. I told her my name, and she told me hers. I offered her to join me for a cup of coffee downtown. We walked a couple of blocks. She told me that she's from Finland. That she's got a one-year working visa in Melbourne.
At first she suggested a 'cafe' in Chinatown, but I said I prefer something more English for an afternoon tea. Finally we went to this French deli place. We had croissaints. She had a cuppacino, I had a white tea (I don't drink coffee). For about an hour we chatted about movies and other stuff. I told her a few things about myself, and found out a few things about her.
At the end I gave her my business card, with my mobile on it. She didn't want to exchange mobile number, but she did say if there's another movies worthy to go to next time, that we'd go together.
Is it love at first sight? Could this be the end of editman's decades of searches for a soul mate?
Well, to be honest I'm not holding my breath. She told me she's dating someone, but hey! I told her right away I'm not trying to pick her up. I did enjoy the conversation with her, talking about controversial movies like Irreversible, Baise Moi and A Clockwork Orange. I'd do anything if I can have a lady friend from Finland, whom I truly believe I really clicked with, at least I enjoy chatting about movies in a kinda serious way, as compared to talking movies with the office girls.
So from now on I won't switch off my mobile. I told myself if she'll ring me some time later, that if we would meet for another 2 times, she then definitely is my soulmate.
But I'm too blind to think logical right now. And with my track record, it would more likely that I won't hear from her again. But for that 3 hours, I really had a very happy day.
Apology for indulging into trivial school-boy lovesick stories. Anyway if anyone can tell me how to spell her name, much appreciated.
And if you would excuse me, I had a Finnish movie to watch on TB tonight. (No, it's not porn.)

Thank, aS!Dz. Although I now really think it's a one-off encounter.
But what I enjoyed was that I really had a conversation with someone with similar interests. I can't recall when the last time I enjoyed such a conservation and just wanna chat for hours and days, probably not since chatting with my first love at junior high!
And no one knows how to spell her name? Uri, where are you when I need you?...

Well, I'm just surprised you have a Chinatown in Australia, I mean it's logical but I just never thought about it, I thought Chinatown was where Americans would round up all the Asians...lol..learn something new every day

He He i am half finnish :-) and half german... so ask me everything you want ...
mh there came some finnish names into my head
like
jana or jaana or Johanna but there are hundreds of different finnisch names that starts with J. and the finnish names are spelled way different to german or english names...
But i would say definitly "joan" :-)
So if you got finnish questions feel free to ask me :-)

Yes, there're Chinatowns in Sydney and Melbourne, although Melbourne's is more like a street than a 'town'. Also, there's other ethnic areas: Lonsdale Street has a few Greek shops. Lygon Street is the Italian hang-out etc.
Thanks, stu. I reckon too that's her name, cos I was thinking 'Joanna' sound like 'Yohaanna' in Finnish/Northern European language. But I won't find out unless the girl gets contact with me again.
It's so cool when you can pronounciate your name differently in different language.
And I used to have a close lady friend called 'Joanne' until she went overseas and got herself a BF. (Ouch!)

her name is most likely Johanna. It sound like "Yoh-anna"
The name Jaana sounds like "Yawn-a"
Both are pretty common in Finland.
My real name is Jaani, which is a guy's name.
I'm all finnish. Did she say in Finland she is from?
The world seems such a small place.

aww editman.. i'm sorry to inform you that she is not your soul mate.... I, Stephie, am your soul mate
That is great you "finally" met an acquaintance who happens to be female. If she does call ya, then she is definitely interested. I wouldn't call up a guy if I wuzn't interested in him. Actually, I only call up a guy if I wuz REALLY interested...
Good luck babe...

That's what I'm afraid of: I may be a good companion for a Saturday afternoon chat after seeing a controversial movie, but the longer it takes, the less likely she'll call me again. Not to mention she didn't want to give me her number. Not to mention she's already dating someone.
Unless they're gonna show The Brown Bunny within the following months, it'd only stay as a 3-hour acquiantance.
At least I still have you.
