"The Darjeeling Limited" is the name of a train travelling in India carrying an interesting group of passengers, but most of whom we only see briefly. The three most important of these rail riders are the Whitman brothers, (Francis, Peter and Jack), played by Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzman. Following the death of their father and the shocking and unexplained absence of their mother at his funeral, the Whitman boys had gone their separate ways and have not spoken for over a year until this train ride. Reunited for the first time, they soon realize that each of them is struggling with issues of trust, depression, anger and confusion about who they are and what they should be doing with their lives.
The hope of big brother Francis, (Owen Wilson), is that this spiritual journey he has orchestrated for he and his siblings across the breathtakingly gorgeous landscape and sacred country of India, will help each of them find inner peace and bring them closer together as brothers. A goal which Francis quickly discovers will be harder than he had anticipated. Having hired a private investigator to track down their elusive mother, played brilliantly by Anjelica Huston, Francis hopes that he, Peter and Jack will find closure and some sense of relief and maybe even some happiness by confronting her and finding out why she abandoned the family when their father died.
This movie dealt with a lot of very serious soul searching drama with a very non-serious dark comedic approach. Although they are dealing with negative feelings of self-loathing, depression, fear and lack of trust, these three manage to poke fun at all of these flaws in the human psyche. There is a lot of dark humour and a lot of plain old stupid fun, so if that is your cup of tea then you will definitely enjoy "The Darjeeling Limited". Let me offer an example of what I mean. When a man stops to have his shoes shined, the young boy polishing them, realizing that the man is injured and thereby unable to pursue him, decides to run off with one of the man's shoes...is that funny to you? If so, you're in luck with this movie my friend. Brotherly brawls in tight confined spaces, a poisonous snake loose on a train, and a nun eating tiger. If these images sound humorous to you then check out this movie right away and have yourself a good laugh.
Adrian Brody is wonderful to watch, as he is in any role he plays and there are two small cameo appearances by Natalie Portman and Bill Murray (although I am still trying to figure out the point of Bill's character in this film). Owen Wilson is Owen Wilson in any movie, although disappointingly he did not have any chemistry/rapport with the two actors playing his brothers which made scenes between them which were meant to be funny seem dry, stale, slow and boring. Overall, I could not wait for "The Darjeeling Limited" to pick up the pace or be over and it never did pick up so it felt like watching a train wreck.
