Ben Affleck has answered his true calling with this film and I am sorry to say ladies that it will keep him behind the cameras instead of in front of them. "Gone Baby Gone" is a beautifully directed movie. There was nothing flashy or complex about it. The dialogue is rough and gritty, as is the backdrop which takes place in dirty roughneck bars, crack houses and on the dark and dangerous streets of Boston. From drug lords, to alcoholic crack-addicted mothers, to pedophiles and crooked cops, this movie touched on some seriously dark issues and the "kid gloves" were off.
Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman are at the height of their game. Both give a couple of emotionally charged speeches which succeeded in giving me goose bumps and chills. I love those old guys.
And hats off to Michelle Monaghan who finally gets the type of serious dramatic role that she is so qualified to play and deserves to play more regularly in the future.
Last but not least, Casey Affleck who (even with my lowest of expectations), was cute, charming, rough and gritty. He is a definite force to be reckoned with.
"Gone Baby Gone" is raw and in-your-face, and gave me a hell of a lot to think about once the credits had started to roll. It made me question my entire moral belief system of what is right and what is wrong. I found myself wondering "how" and "if" I could do something I knew was considered socially wrong, if I felt that it was "the right thing to do"? What bothered me most about this movie, was not knowing what my choice of action would be if forced with a similar situation as the characters find themselves in "Gone Baby Gone". Would I be able to play judge and jury with someone else’s life? And if I did, would I be comfortable with someone else judging my life and my actions with the same criticisms and scrutiny? It left me with one of those yucky lumps in my throat that I just could not swallow.
But morals and personal judgements aside, this movie is absolutely fantastic. I look forward to Ben Affleck's future endeavours as a director.
