The Heartbreak Kid
by Jenny Jones
Okay, so what's with Ben Stiller anyways? Is he ever funny? I know it sounds like a bad Seinfeld joke, but come on, enough is enough already. I have no idea what they were aiming for with this movie but I am hoping that they largely missed their mark. In "The Heartbreak Kid", a bad Seinfeld joke would have been a refreshing alternative to the rude and inappropriate humour offered in its place.
Speaking of Seinfeld, I am the first to admit that Jerry Stiller was fabulous as Frank Constanza on that show for years. And he even managed to make the same character work as the father on "The King of Queens", but it's just not working anymore. Enough already with the 70 something year old man screaming obscenities in wild fits of inexplicable rage. It had it's run but it is time to move on and try something new.
This entire movie was full of inappropriate dark humour that, to me, just was not funny. It felt like the usual Ben Stiller movie but with an attempt to push the envelope, to try to make all of the same old jokes seem comical, but they really went too far. I found most of the jokes to be disgusting, offensive and just plain dumb.
Every affliction that Ben's new wife, played by Malin Akerman, suffered from were exaggerated to the point of stupidity and the physical attributes of his sidekick buddy, which were meant to be humorous, were extremely immature and in poor taste. Definitely, absolutely not funny. I just don't find middle-aged men using terms like "snatch", "cock-blockin'" or "pussy poundin'" to be humorous. Call me old-fashioned, but once you're over 50 this kind of language just seems immature and inappropriate in any situation. However, the writers of this movie would obviously disagree since this type of language was the cornerstone for most of the comedy in "The Heartbreak Kid".
Just writing about this movie makes me annoyed. I must apologize to anyone who enjoys a good Ben Stiller movie, but even you must admit as Stiller supporters that "The Heartbreak Kid" does not rank among his better works. The only heartbreak experienced during the viewing of this film was mine, with disappointment in both Stiller junior and senior for agreeing to make such a horrible flick.
On the up side, the music was decent and the sound was okay but these few positive elements were not enough to save this movie from completely going down the crapper.
In other Ben Stiller films such as "There's Something About Mary", "Meet the Parents", or "Night at the Museum", he can usually be saved by the strong acting and powerful comic support of his co-stars. Unfortunately, though Malin Akerman and Michelle Monaghan both gave excellent performances in this film, the poor writing and totally lame jokes prevented the 2 fabulous actresses from pulling this stinker up out of the gutter.
This movie stunk and I only hope that Ben Stiller decides to go in a whole new direction with his next movie choice.
