The Invasion
by Jenny Jones

If you don't like Nicole Kidman, this is not a movie for you because she is "The Invasion". Actually, if you aren't a huge Kidman fan, this movie may just change your opinion of her. When I first saw the trailers for this film I thought "Great. Another half-assed remake of an old horror flick that wasn't very good to begin with." Thankfully, I am pleased to report that I was pleasantly surprised.

As far as horror films go "The Invasion" keeps it clean and simple. It is not gory or gruesome but it has an intense sense of creepiness and suspense that builds up slowly and maintains straight through to the end. It was quite refreshing to watch a scary movie that did not rely solely on blood, guts and gore to frighten the audience. Instead the atmosphere for this movie was created by frequent darkly lit scenes, a lot of creepy, bassy music and excellent acting by everyone involved. The ability of each actor in this production to keep a solemnly straight face and exhibit little to no emotion in any situation was outstanding.

Nicole Kidman is phenomenal as a strong-willed and intelligent single mom with a successful psychiatry practice by day. Her stellar performance in this film echoes her memorable display of talent in a similar suspense thriller from a few years ago, "The Others". Kidman has definitely found her niche. She reiterates her flare for excelling in films that focus on the silently tense and creepy. With just the subtle panic and fear portrayed in the cool tone of her voice and in the calm control of her facial expressions, Kidman makes it seem effortless. Nicole also proves once again that she has a knack for working with children. However, it is important to note that much like in "The Others", it does not hurt that Kidman's young co-star, Jackson Bond, is quite a talented little scene stealer himself.

So, if you are looking for some excellent acting and a premise and mood that will send chills crawling down your spine, you have to check out "The Invasion".
