Juno
by Jenny Jones

Without a doubt one of the absolute best movies that I saw this year. Anyone and everyone will relate to and love this movie, but those that have been through the trials and tribulations of a pregnancy will find it particularly entertaining. Although the plot of this movie has been seen time and time again in movies over the years, "Juno" manages to add a little spunk and a whole lot of laughs to the sensitive issue of teenage pregnancy. From those familiar touching moments when you first see your baby on the ultrasound screen, to the frustration and stress of dealing with physical changes and an unstable teenage relationship, this movie touches on every emotion involved in the process of child-bearing and still manages to not take itself too seriously.

Young Juno McGuff (check spelling) has quite a journey ahead of her, as this 16 year old social outcast discovers she is pregnant and ultimately decides to place her child up for adoption. Her parents are shocked by the news of course but rise to the occasion and help support their daughter in any ways that they can as she struggles through this difficult time in her teenage life. Once the adoptive parents have been chosen, all that any of them can do is sit back and wait. It is going to be a long nine months of testing relationships and personal discovery with a ton of laughter and tears along the way.

Like I said before, there is nothing new about this topic, but what I loved about "Juno" is the unique and refreshing approach they used. From the opening scene, until the credits roll, this movie is jam packed with catchy little pop ditties that will make you smile and feel warm and happy inside. Furthermore, the endless stream of one liners and quirky, clever comments will keep you laughing out loud from one scene to the next. The dialogue is intelligent but witty and all of the characters are just a little unstable either emotionally or psychologically. Not to mention that there is also a believable amount of immaturity displayed by the characters. Their inexperience, their fears, their anxiety all can be felt by the audience and it makes the story feel more real. "Juno" is a comedy about life that welcomes the viewers as one of the family. I felt like I was a part of the entire process, and I laughed and cried right along with all of the people involved. Not only was the story fun and inviting but the acting performances were absolutely stellar. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are flawless as the picture perfect adoptive couple. While J. K. Simmons (of Law & Order fame) and Allison Janney are wonderful as Juno's quirky but totally cool and supportive parents. And although it goes without saying, I will mention it anyways, Ellen Page and Michael Cera stole the show as the troubled teenaged couple who find themselves struggling with an unwanted pregnancy and an unstable relationship. I have no idea where Ellen Page has been hiding herself all of these years but if the rest of this charismatic young ladies’ endeavours in cinema are even half as brilliant as "Juno" this talented, beautiful and loveable young woman has an extremely bright future ahead of her. I can not wait to see what she throws at us next!
