"Music Within" is the inspiring story of Richard Pimentel and the revolutionary changes that he generated in the modern work place, as well as the radical alterations that he managed to make to the attitudes of employers, business owners and politicians towards the treatment of people with disabilities.
As a young boy, Richard always knew he wanted to find his "music within", (his personal talent or gift) and share it with the whole world. It took a lot of rejection, a tour of duty in Vietnam and a permanent hearing disability for him to figure out what that talent was. Richard Pimentel was meant to help people like himself, people with disabilities who were repeatedly disrespected by employers and ignored by the general public. It took the friendship of a number of disabled war veterans and a very special man, Art Honeyman, a fellow student at his university afflicted with cerebral palsy, for Richard to realize that his true calling was to change the way the world viewed these people. He quit his high paying job with an insurance company to take a job with the government finding employment for disabled people. With continued success Richard was personally approached by the Governor and asked to design a program which would teach all employers and government agencies how to work with disabled people. Richard not only designed this program, Windmills, which is still taught today, he also designed a second program called Perspectives and was instrumental in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. Richard Pimentel proved that one man can make a difference if he can just find his "music within".
Ron Livingston, who also co-produced this beautiful true story, is witty and raw as Richard Pimentel. Livingston portrayed the bitterness, anger and frustration that came from not only dealing with his disability but also with frequent rejection and ignorance from employers, masterfully. The rapport between he and character Art Honeyman, played by Michael Sheen, was touching and hilarious. They managed to bring humour to their situation using tact and good taste. "Music Within" manages to bring to light some very serious issues without making individuals with disabilities appear weak or making them out to be victims. This movie tells an inspiring story of empowerment and equality for all men, women and children. It is not fast-paced or flashy but tells the important and impressive story of one man, the friendships that touched his life and enabled him to find his "Music Within", and the changes he has made to the world that we now know.
