Imagine our sun is burning out, threatening the extinction of everything on earth. In an attempt to save ourselves we have gathered the 8 best scientists and astronauts on earth to travel into space and launch a nuclear missile into the sun with the hope that the intense explosion will create a new star... a new sun!
Now imagine that the first crew of 8 mysteriously failed to complete their mission so we have sent a second and final team; the last hope of all life on earth. Wow! What a plot right?
After seeing the trailers for "Sunshine" I could not wait to see this movie. Not only did the plot sound exciting, action-packed and suspenseful, but the subplot which sees the second crew of scientists run into a series of suspicious problems and setbacks, only amplified my intense desire to see this film.
For the most part, the acting was good, the soundtrack was decent and the sound, especially the bass, was loud. In fact, if you want to give your subwoofer a workout, this is an excellent film for the job. But something seemed to be missing for me. I just did not care about any of the characters, nor did I care whether their mission was a success or a failure. Maybe there was not enough time spent on character development or they did not stress the dire situation of mankind enough. I'm not sure what was lacking but all of the shots of empty hallways in the spaceship and breakaway shots to the fire and lava representing the ever approaching sun seemed more repetitive, boring and simply like filler rather than building any kind of suspense or intrigue.
Not to mention, the explanation for all the strange mishaps onboard the second shuttle seemed weak. I guess I just did not buy the explanation offered.
If you are a sci-fi fan you should still give "Sunshine" a chance. I know a lot of people really enjoyed the story as well as how it was presented. However, do not set your expectations too high. For a movie with such an exciting and original plot, I found this movie only let off a few sparks here and there but never fully shined.
