STONE READER
(jetfilms)

Release Date: February 12, 2003
D: Mark Moskowitz
Plot: In 1972, the New York Times ran a review of the 600-page novel, "The Stones of Summer", by first-time author Dow Mossman, which included a claim that that the novel was *the* book of the new generation. 18-year-old Mark Moskowitz bought the book on that promise, couldn't get past the first 20 pages, and promptly put the book on a shelf where it sat for 25+ years. Going back to the novel in the late 1990s, the now middle-aged Moskowitz discovers that he can't put the book down. Wanting to buy copies for friends, Moskowitz is surprised to discover that the book is not only out-of-print, but impossible to find. As he searches for the book, he discovers that he can't find anyone who's read the book, or has ever heard of the author, which leads him to make this documentary about his search for Dow Mossman. Along the way, his conversations also investigate the nature of reading, the importance of novels, and the question of why some great authors only publish one book.
