Plot: Warren Schmidt is a recently-widowed retired actuary in his 60's struggling with "self-deception." The story focuses on his relationship with his daughter, for whom he has expectations (whom she'll marry, where they'll live, etc). Within a short period, however, all of the institutions that he's understood his whole life fade away, and he's left to face where he is in life while he still has time to do something about it.
