As the competition for box office dollars increases, having a good movie trailer is critical.

A whole industry has sprung up to make movie trailers, in an effort to whet our anticipation for the coming blockbusters, including films such as this summer’s Prometheus and The Great Gatsby.

Trailers might feature scenes that get cut from the final movie or a soundtrack that bears no relation to what’s coming in the cinema.

Often the companies are asked to assemble trailers out of the raw unedited footage.

For comedies, the kiss of death is giving away too many of the good jokes – though giving away none would also be a mistake.

Yet there’s an art to a winning trailer, an art that is celebrated in the upcoming Golden Trailer Awards, created by sisters Evelyn and Monica Brady.

As Eli Glasner reports, what the industry considers a good trailer doesn’t always work for movie fans.
