Movies We’re Looking Forward to in 2015

Posted on January 11th, 2015

Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

(October 16)

Synopsis:

The movie plays out in 19th century England and a young author by the name of Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) discovers that her new husband isn’t exactly what she thought he was. She moves to his poorly maintained mansion in the rural mountains where all the mystery unfolds.

Excitement Value:

This one is for all the romantic horror fans and just the name of writer/director Guillermo del Toro is enough to create a lot of hype. The director’s previous forays into the genre (“The Devil’s Backbone,” “Pan’s Labyrinth”) proved his skill at balancing scares and humanity, and with a killer cast this is easily my most anticipated horror movie of 2015.

Terminator: Genisys

Terminator: Genisys

(July 1)

Synopsis:

John Connor (Jason Clarke) is once again forced to send someone back in time to save his mother and ultimately himself. He chooses his lieutenant Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), but Reese finds that the past has changed. Now Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) is an orphan raised and protected by an old T-800 terminator model (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Together they have to survive the onslaught of another T-800 model in addition to a new T-1000.

Excitement Value:

Forget everything after Terminator 2, because director Alan Taylor is focused on saving the reputation of the Terminator franchise. The movie will continue where Terminator 2 left off, is the first of a new planned trilogy of films and good old Arnold will be re-taking his place as one of the heroes. It will be exciting to see if Taylor can get the love back for everyone’s beloved killing machine.

The Martian

The Martian

(November 25)

Synopsis:

This is another book adaptation about an astronaut (Matt Damon) that has been stranded on mars. In other words, it’s a science-fiction survival movie that can get very interesting.

Excitement Value:

Although not much information is available about this Sci-Fi Action flick, it features a killer cast (Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels), it’s written by Drew Goddard (World War Z, The Cabin in the Woods) and more importantly… it’s directed by Ridley Scott. ’nuff said?

Inside Out

Inside Out

(June 19)

Synopsis:

Little Riley has to handle all the emotions that goes along with moving to another city and getting settled. But her emotions, namely Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness and Disgust aren’t making things easy. Their conflict about how to handle a new school and town makes this animation film a potential hit.

Excitement Value:

Trust Walt Disney and Pixar Studios to come up with something very original. Riley’s emotions are stand-alone characters inside her head and like any dysfunctional family things are going to get messy. It’s probably the least anticipated Pixar film so far, but that being said… it’s Pixar. There is no doubt that they will once again provide something original, and entertaining for the whole family.

Furious 7

Furious 7

(April 3)

Synopsis:

Revenge is the order of the day as Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) is out to make Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) a living hell. In turn, Toretto is hung up on getting back at Ian Shaw (Jason Statham) for his actions that can be traced back to Tokyo Drift.

Excitement Value:

The movie is somewhat bittersweet, because everyone waited anxiously for a Fast and Furious climax, but we also said goodbye to a beloved Paul Walker, who was about halfway through his filming at the time of his death. Body doubles, stunt doubles and CGI were used to ‘stand-in’ for him after his death. The release of the film was delayed due to the tragedy last year, but let’s hope the movie does his reputation justice.

hateful

The Hateful Eight

(November 13)

Synopsis:

A group of bounty hunters start to turn against each other as they try to survive a storm some years after the Civil War.

Excitement Value:

You don’t need much more than to see the name Quentin Tarantino to get excited about this. But as Western on top of that? Count me in. Long term collaborators Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen are along for the ride as well as Channing Tatum, Walton Goggins and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It was originally shelved in 2014 after the script was leaked online but we can thank our lucky stars that Tarantino decided to move forward regardless. Filming is currently underway.

Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland

(May 22)

Synopsis:

2015 is definitely the year for science-fiction as Frank (George Clooney) and Casey (Britt Robertson) takes a journey to a place only referred to as Tomorrowland. Things work a little differently over there and their actions aren’t without consequence.

Excitement Value:

Apart from the well-known actors and the Disney name behind the release, Tomorrowland looks like it’s going to be one of the most interesting movies of 2015. Thanks to the teaser that was shown at Comic-Con in New York everyone is on the edge of their seats to see how it will unfold. Brad Bird was originally approached to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens but turned it down in favour of Tomorrowland.

Chappie

Chappie

(March 6)

Synopsis:

Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver are in the lead of this humane robotic story. It tells the story of a stolen robot called Chappie and his childish personality. More importantly, the story shows how Chappie learns from the people around him.

Excitement Value:

The same guy that brought us District 9 and Elysium, Neill Blomkamp, is responsible for this modern day Short Circuit and it will be interesting to see how he balances the sci-fi action and humor which is apparent in the trailer. Blomkamp has a great way of placing viewers in a difficult emotional position.
