Ocean’s Eight to begin production: What to expect from the all-female heist movie

The Oceans trilogy (Oceans 11, 12, and 13) have all been highly successful movies. And they definitely take the cake for our favourite casino heist movies of all time! And now the news is that Oceans 8 is about to begin production, with a 2018 release date having been set. Yes, that is a long time from now – but were still allowed to get a bit excited! For those of you who were wondering why we are not getting an Oceans 14 – I cannot tell you why they settled on 8! But what we do know is that all of Oceans 8 are women this time, which will be quite a nice divergence from the original trilogy.

We wonder what aspect of the casino will be the at centre of the plot? Will it be counting cards in Blackjack? Elaborate schemes to win high stake poker? We will have to wait to see the finer details, but were pretty sure that it will not revolve around bingo games as this is not really a big money maker for the average casino.

The aspect of the movie that most are excited about, is their star-studded cast. But after the multiple Hollywood A-listers featured in the previous three films, is this really any big surprise to the public? The cast of Oceans 8 include Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina as well as Rihanna. The first thing we have to say about the cast is that it is packed to the brim with talented actresses, and we cannot wait to see the characters that have been assigned to each of them. Something else that is notable about the cast is its racial diversity and representation. While the majority of the leads are white, it is a big improvement from the racial diversity in the previous Oceans films. Kaling, Rihanna, and Awkwafina add some much needed diversity in the cast.

Another exciting aspect of this movie is Gary Ross involvement as a screenwriter and director. Ross is best known for both his screenwriting and directing skills in popular and successful movies such as Seabiscuit and The Hunger Games. With such a talented director at the helm of this movie, we are sure that is will be a well filmed and directed production that will do well come awards season.

We do not know much about the actual movie at present, but Mindy Kaling has given us some hints during her interview on The Late Night Show with Steven Colbert. Kaling says that she is scared about her role in the movie. She says that she is scared that compared to Rihanna and Cate Blanchett, she will just look like the kooky sidekick in the movie. But this comment was in response to her being asked what her special skill in the movie is so perhaps this is Kalings witty, self-deprecating way of evading giving us answers. We will have to wait and see what happens!
