A DC Cinematic Universe Rundown

Posted on March 24th, 2017

Even with the embarrassment of the Best Picture Award now out of the way, there is still fresh talk about the Academy Awards. From video spoofs to tongue-in-cheek sporting tributes like these, the Oscars, it seems, are a preferred source of entertainment for the online community!

Thank god then we have the ole DC faithful to get us back on track in 2017 and if the latest Justice League trailer is anything to go by, it looks set to be another action-packed year for superheroes.

With Man of Steel, back in 2013, DC and Warner Bros. kicked off their own cinematic comics universe in response to Marvel comics` very successful one. The movie was received with high praise from both fans and critics, starring heavyweight actors like Kevin Costner and Russel Crowe alongside Henry Cavill as the new Superman. Building on the movie`s success, DC and Warner went on the produce the much anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. While Dawn of Justice was not as well received as Man of Steel, it set the stage for a lot of spin-off movies to be announced, dealing with the different heroes of the Justice League we know from the comics, such as The Flash, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and a stand-alone Batman movie, starring the dark knight in his own solo outing. There is also a Justice League movie set to come out later this year, starring all our favorite heroes in the same movie together. Here is what we know so far about each one.

The Flash

While The Flash already has had a very successful TV-show running for a couple of seasons at the CW, the DC movie universe is a completely separate one and the two won’t be linked. A new actor, Ezra Miller, has been cast as Barry Allen/The Flash and will set the movie to be an origin story, detailing how The Flash got his powers and what made him the superhero he is. That is basically all we know about The Flash movie so far, apart from the fact that it will come out in 2020. No news has been released on this new film and the only glimpses of The Flash we’ve seen so far are sequences in Batman v Superman and the Justice League trailers.

Cyborg

Cyborg`s solo movie is even more enigmatic then The Flash. There has not even been a release date announced. Of course, actor Ray Fisher will play the iconic robotic hero, but apart from that, only snippets of the script are known so far, and it deals with Cyborg`s struggle to remain human, despite the fact that more then 80% of his body is cybernetic. He will also show up in Justice League and The Flash, so we will get to see more of him before his solo movie.

Wonder Woman

We have seen Wonder Woman, portrayed by the very talented Gal Gadot in Batman v Superman, and there are a couple of trailers available for her solo movie. It will also be an origin story and they stuck really closely to the comics for this one. Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, an american pilot who crash lands on the fabled island nation of Themyscira, will come face to face with a fierce nation of warrior women, called the Amazons and subsequently recruits their most powerful warrior princess, Diana/Wonder Woman to come back with him to America to help win World War I, which threatens to destroy the world. There have been hints at a relationship developing between the two as well. All in all, very accurate to the source material. The movie is set to come out this summer.

Aquaman

The solo Aquaman movie is as mysterious as the Cyborg or Flash movies. All the info we have so far, is that Jason Momoa will play Arthur Curry/Aquaman and that Nicole Kidman might possibly play Atlanna, his mother. The story is rumored to be about the fact that Arthur learns that he is the heir to the kingdom of Atlantis and goes there to claim the throne and also save his people in the process. We’re betting we will see Black Manta and other traditional Aquaman villains, although nothing has been confirmed so far.

The Batman

A lot of controversy has surrounded the solo Batman movie. It was initially set to be directed by Ben Affleck, who also plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, but he later resigned, being replaced by Matt Reeves. We will apparently get Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke and of course Jeremy Irons as Alfred. But apart from these tidbits, nothing more is known about the movie. It probably won`t be an origin story, either. And we don`t know yet if Jared Leto`s Joker will show up in the movie.

As for the Justice League, there is already a ton of info available. We already had two trailers, Zack Snyder is back in the director`s chair and it will come out early fall this year. We will see the whole team together, thanks to Batman`s recruitment efforts and they are probably going to fight some really big bad guy this time around. We’re betting it will be Darkseid, but we will just have to wait for more info. Also, there is a huge possibility that Superman is going to return, although nothing has been hinted at so far. But seeing as how he is an integral part of the League, he definitely should make an appearance.

I`m sure more info will come out on the other movies in the DC cinematic universe in the near future. Until then, we can enjoy Wonder Woman and Justice League later this year.
