Posted on April 9th, 2019

There are a number of films that have drawn inspiration from the sophisticated and often creative theme of casinos. Most of the best casino inspired flicks vary in production with some categorised in the comedy, thriller and action genres. These movies may incorporate land-based casinos or even online casinos within their plot. Either way, casino themed movies tend to be exciting and riveting in every possible way. This is why we have decided to list the top 10 casino movies of all time. In fact, after viewing our list of casino movies, you may want a new casinos finder to help you get in on the casino action.

10: Casino (1996)

Our list wouldn’t be fully rounded without a movie titled casino now would it? Directed by Marin Scorsese, this movie follows Sam “Ace” Rothstein (impressively portrayed by Robert De Niro) a casino operator with mob connections. After a mafia kingpin moves to town things seem to go haywire. This movie not only features a casino theme, but also shows us the evils of greed, power and deceit.

9: The Cooler (2003)

The Cooler is directed by Wayne Kramer and stars the very talented William H. Macy and Maria Bello. The film follows an avid gambling enthusiast who breaks his gambling curse by falling in love, something his controlling boss isn’t very happy about.

8: The Hangover (2009)

The Hangover is probably one of the funniest casino movies to ever come out of the studios of Hollywood. The movie follows a group of three friends who visit Vegas to celebrate their buddy’s bachelor party. They wake up the next morning with absolutely zero recall of the night before, and somewhere in the mix of the madness, they seemed to have lost their bachelor friend. This one is directed by Todd Phillips and brings on quite the laughter!

7: Rounders (1999)

Being a reformed gambler certainly does not come without its own set of challenges, especially in this John Dahl directed movie. The plot takes a massive twist when he must return to gambling once more. His return is flayed with challenges as he tries to balance his relationship with his girlfriend while at the same time trying to help out a friend and finish law school. With the leads played by Matt Damon, Ed Norton and Gretchen Mol, these complex characters are all brought to life in a refreshing light.

6: Honeymoon in Vegas (1992)

In this 90s classic, the themes of overcoming debt and balancing everyday life are brought to full shining glory. The main character Jack (played by the ever-talented Nicolas Cage) has lost $65,000 during a poker game in Las Vegas where he had intentions to marry his fiancée, Betsy. Unfortunately, all wedding plans are put on hold as his poker competitor demands time with Betsy to right off his debt. This movie treads into rather messy territory, but we certainly enjoy the plot twist.

5: The Good Thief (2002)

With a movie title like this, it’s no wonder this movie is based in a casino and yes, you guessed it, it’s about stealing from a casino.  Nick Nolte’s character is an aging gambling enthusiast on a losing streak who decides to rob a Monte Carlo based casino. To his unpleasant surprise, the whole shtick is jinxed as the police have already been notified of his plans.

4: 007 Casino Royale (2007)

Who doesn’t love a James Bond movie? We simply can’t resist the good old saying “the name is Bond, James Bond”. Daniel Craig (aka James Bond) decides to use his license to kill when he goes after a private banker while seated at the tables of the Casino Royale in Montenegro. This is when things get a little sticky, but nothing our young spy cannot handle.

3: Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Heist movies are thrilling, exciting and just plain mind-blowing at times and the Ocean’s movies have been able to capture these themes incredibly well. In Ocean’s Eleven, our favourite theme and heist boss, Danny Ocean, must assemble his team of eleven partners in crime (literally) in order to execute a heist to rob not one, not two, but three Las Vegas casinos, and get this – all at the same time!

2: Croupier

When Clive Owen’s character is employed as a croupier at a casino, he gets inspired to finish his novel. His experiences in this new insane job allows him access to plenty of inspiring content as he witnesses and is a part of some crazy endeavours that make for a great watch.

1: 21

21 Is based on a true story and features a casino theme with one of the most complex table games of all time, blackjack. Appropriately titled 21, the movie follows six MIT students who were assembled and trained to become connoisseur card counters. This helped them eventually strip Las Vegas casino of millions of dollars in blackjack wins.
